In celebration of marriage equality coming to Florida, First Unitarian Church offered free weddings to same-sex couples on the afternoon of Saturday, January 10th. Fourteen couples were joined in marriage while their family and friends, as well as members of the First Unitarian community, celebrated with them. In addition to a customized ceremony with a choice of music, each couple had professional photographs and then an introduction announcement to the ongoing reception, where they were toasted and offered a chance to cut the wedding cake.
In addition, a group ceremony was held celebrating 13 couples whose earlier out-of-state marriages are now recognized by Florida.
Ceremonies were officiated by Ministerial Intern, Lois Cole, Minister Emerita, Rev. Marni Harmony, and current Minister Rev. Kathy Schmitz. Everything else was joyfully provided by members of the 1U community.
