Transition in Children’s Religious Education Leadership

The following note recently went out to those actively involved in the Children’s Religious Education program. We are now sharing this news with the rest of the congregation.

May 10, 2014

Dear Parents & Teachers,

As you know, we are in a period of transition in our Children’s Religious Education Program. When Abbie Potter resigned to take a new position last year, we decided to have a year or two of interim leadership in the Children’s Religious Education staff position, allowing us time to explore our long terms needs in this area. To that end, we advertised for a one-year-half-time Coordinator of Religious Education. Michelle Smith was hired and has served us over this last year. At this point, we are not ready to hire for the permanent position and so will do another year of interim. However, we feel that a change in leadership would be appropriate for the second year. To that end, Michelle will end her time with us on June 30.

We will thank Michelle in the Children’s Religious Education Service on May 18. Michelle will then be present the first three Sundays in June to oversee our Nursery and Childcare programs which continue through the summer. As a reminder, several upcoming services are intergenerational and we encourage you and your children to enjoy them as a family. Please see below for details.

We are in the process of negotiating with someone to fill the Coordinator of Religious Education position for the coming year – again on an interim basis. We hope to be able to make an announcement about that soon.

If you have any questions about this transition, please get in touch with Louise Christie, the Chair of our Children’s Religious Education Committee, or Rev. Kathy who supervises our staff.

Sincerely,
Rev. Kathy

  • May 25 – Our worship service features a guest girls’ choir. Children are encouraged to attend to experience the gifts of this elite musical group.
  • June 1 – Our worship service is presented by the young people in our Coming of Age program. Other children, as well as adults, are encouraged to attend to hear the wisdom of these young people as they take an important step in their spiritual journeys.
  • June 8 – Our worship service includes our year-end Flower Communion as well as a Child Dedication Ceremony.

Our programming will resume in the fall with our Intergenerational Water Communion on September 8. The following week, we will kick off the new year of Children’s Religious Education and resume our two-service schedule.
