Building Steering Committee & RFP Introduced

At 1U’s recent Town Hall meeting, the 1U Building Steering Committee (BST) unveiled the plan for the first steps of building our dream on our campus. The plan includes creating three teams, as well as someone overseeing all:  Communications, Building/Design and Finance. The team has put together an initial Request for Proposal (RFP) that is going out to five architectural firms. This RFP reflects the wishes and dreams that we’ve talked about for many years. Another congregational town hall on March 16 will focus on the proposals we receive in response. See here for a letter with an overview of the meeting, here for the RFP and here for the PowerPoint presentation that was shared at the meeting. This is the very beginning of the process and by no means does this RFP include everything that will be in our final building, but it is a way to get us started. We’re off to an exciting adventure—we’d love for you to read it all and be involved! At any times, comments and questions can be sent to BldgCommunications@OrlandoUU.org.

CSAI Survey

In support of the UUA effort to have congregations assist with the review and selection of Congregational Study Action Issues for the 2014 General Assembly, 1U members and friends discussed the proposed topics forwarded by the UUA at Adult RE, and following discernment, voted to move forward four topics: Renewing and Securing Our American Democracy, Escalating Inequality, Gun Violence: A Public Health Issue, and Ending the War on Terror. Two topics did not receive votes: Empowerment: Age and Ability Reconsidered and UU Values and the Pursuit of a Just Peace for Israelis and Palestinians. The UUA will compile all votes and move up to five of the topics to GA in Providence for further discernment and a final vote.

Through this minister-extending program, members can receive compassionate care when they are in pain, sick, lonely or struggling with changes.  It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support.   If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Associates Coordinator Harriett Smithson (pastoralassociates@OrlandoUU.org).

A church visitor meets and asks several members: What are you doing?”

The first member replies, “I’m making coffee for Social Time. It’s not exciting, but it’s my turn this month.

A second member responds, “I’m the best coffee maker on the Social Time team. I work hard on the perfect the source and roast of the beans, the smoothness of our brew.”

The visitor asks the question a third time. The third member, with pride in his voice proclaims, “Me? I’m providing another really tasty opportunity for building our beloved community.

How often do each of us keep our minds on the highest goal of our work at 1U? Such a habit is valuable as we launch our capital program, but benefits us in all areas of life:

– How we navigate our relationships within a larger community

– How we give and get input/feedback

– How we handle challenges… and disappointments that are sure to arise.
