Pancakes and Blueberries, Oh My!

Calling all men of the church who are qualified to cook pancakes with blueberries in them. These are not just any pancakes, but the most superior in the western hemisphere! We have been asked to present another awesome breakfast to the friends and members of 1U – and guests from the District meeting. If you are up to the challenge, we are looking for volunteers to assist with the April 19 event. For those that feel intimidated about the pancake cooking skill part, there are lots of other jobs, and we have a blast doing it. Let Dan Homblette know if you want to be part of this traditional event.

Our Share-the-Plate recipient for February is Orlando Youth Alliance (OYA). Founded in 1990 as Delta Alliance for Youth, OYA provides a non-exploitative, safe, drug-and-alcohol-free, social outlet for youth ages 13 to 24 who are grappling with gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and questioning issues. OYA also sees it as their mission to educate parents, academia, health care workers and other human service professionals about the development and diversity of sexuality, and to sensitize them to the reality and needs of the GLBTQ community. Michael Slaymaker of OYA will be joining us on Sunday, February 22.

The Choral Fest is Coming!!

1U will be the host site for the 8th Annual Florida UU Choral Fest on March 7 & 8.  Florida UU choir and/or music ministry members will be at 1U to participate in this event. The overall theme for the Fest is “Building the Dream.” as we gather together for fine choral singing and fellowship. The music will reflect that theme.  1U volunteers are needed to host this event.  Please contact Amy (churchadministrator@OrlandoUU.org) to volunteer or for more information.

1st Sunday of the Month Fellowship

An experiment is underway to connect 1U members and friends for fellowship on the 1st Sunday of each month. Groups gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of the 417, Downtown, West Orlando, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “DInner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes: less work for everyone. If you are interested in learning more or to find a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. It’s always the 1st Sunday, but times and locations vary. You will be put in touch with a neighborhood host, who handles the details of their local arrangements, as well as RSVPs.

Save the Date! FL District Annual Assembly

An entire weekend of activities with fellow UUs April 17-19 at 1U:  workshops, speakers, fellowship and good food. More info coming. Volunteers are needed to help host.  Interested?  Contact Amy in the church office: churchadministrator@OrlandoUU.org

Give Pennies for Publix to Support Farmworkers

The holiday season is a good time to use a highly effective tool in the ongoing effort to get Publix to sign the Fair Food pledge with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. Tape a penny to a note that reads:

I want to see Publix sign the Fair Food pledge with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers so farmworkers can have better pay and decent working conditions. Please use my pennies so Justice is done.

By signing the Fair Food pledge Publix will commit to pay one extra cent per pound for tomatoes they sell in their store, thus helping to ensure that these farmworkers get better pay and decent working conditions. More info here. Create your own notes or download here our already prepared document for printing out multiple notes at once. Tape a penny to each note, take them with you on each Publix shopping trip, and hand your cashier the penny’d note to urge Publix to support CIW.

Discussions on Escalating Inequality and Homelessness Being Planned

Watch for several opportunities to be in conversation with others around Escalating Inequality, the current UUA Congregational Study/Action Issue (CSAI). Let’s consider ways to engage this issue. How can we support the renew commitment to address issues of homelessness in Central Florida?  How can we be more effective in our relationships with other organizations such as those supporting farm workers? If you would like to be on a direct email list for those particularly interested in these issues, please let us know at socialjustice@orlandouu.org.

Continuing Food Drive

We continue the food drive for Catholic Charities Semoran Food Pantry. Please continue to bring items in and place them in the box in Gore Hall. Thanks for sharing with those in need.

Pastoral Care Associates

Pastoral Care Associates are fellow 1U members who have been especially trained to provide a confidential, caring presence to congregants undergoing stressful life challenges. Through this minister-extending program, members can receive compassionate care when they are in pain, sick, lonely or struggling with changes. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Associates Coordinator Harriett Smithson.

1U Caring Circle

Members of the Caring Circle offer kind, practical, tangible efforts to other church members who may be experiencing significant joys, concerns, sorrows, or changes in their lives. Monthly contact people follow up on Joys and Concerns expressed in Sunday worship, as well as notices from the minister or other church members, about short-term circumstances that may need attention. Other members serve in providing phone calls, greeting cards, rides to church events, medical appointments, meals for a while, pet care, etc. Please contact our Caring Circle coordinator Jenny Lockington at CaringCircle@OrlandoUU.org for details or to participate.
