Building Committee Update
Thanks to everyone who came to hear the update on the building process last Sunday. For those who missed it, you can find a link to the update here. Over the next month we’ll be gearing up for the Capital Campaign, including having our UUA Consultant, Barry Finkelstein, joining us on August 16. Our architect will have preliminary plans for us to review by the middle or end of August. As always, if you have any questions, contact Bldgcommunications@orlandouu.org.
The 90-second video Rethink Homeless, which was shown in worship on July 13 can be viewed here.
Campus Tenders Appreciation
The Campus Tenders team thanks this past Saturday’s participants for their gracious and energetic support in tending to and beautifying the church campus and facilities. The strong turnout is especially appreciated since this team has moved to a quarterly, rather than monthly, meeting schedule.
The church fiscal year ended on June 30. All those who have not yet completed their pledge for the previous fiscal year are urged to do so as soon as possible. To help us credit your pledge payment properly, please note in the memo field of your check whether your payment is for the current fiscal year (2014-2015) or the past fiscal year (7/1/2013 – 6/30/2014). If there is no designation, all payments received will be credited to the current fiscal year. If not sure if your pledge is paid-up, still need to pledge for the upcoming fiscal year, or have a question about your pledge? Contact Amy in the church office (firstname.lastname@example.org or 407-898-3621 x0).
What Feeds Your Soul?
Connecting with people? Helping develop a child’s self-concept? Leading our youth and presenting our UU principles? You’re in the right place! Children’s Religious Education seeks to connect YOU to a positive and rewarding experience as an RE teacher. Kids range in age from preschool through high school. You will serve on a teaching team with others passionate about our youth and will lead once or twice per month. If leading isn’t your cup of tea, volunteer to assist a teacher. No experience necessary. Contact Regina Knabe at RECoordinator@OrlandoUU.org and be an inspiration to a child this year.
Adult RE Help Needed
We would like to continue to offer adult RE at 9:30 in Room 18 when the new program year starts up in September. Anyone who has a burning desire to share any topic related in any way to our Seven Principles or congregational life, on a monthly basis from mid-September through May, please find Charlotte Fleming and share your ideas. We need 4 people, and each person can tap others to lead individual sessions. The possibilities are endless, and the task easy.
Share the Plate Update
Watch for more information from the Social Justice task force about how our list of organizations for next year’s Share the Plate will be selected.
Coalition for the Homeless: Immediate Needs
The Coalition for the Homeless has immediate needs for: Underwear and socks (for both men and women), razors, baby wipes, men’s flip flops. Donations are accepted Mon-Sat 9-5 or by appointment at 639 W. Central Blvd., Orlando. NOTE: They do not accept clothing other than as specified.
Continuing Food Drive
We continue the food drive for Catholic Charities Semoran Food Pantry. Please continue to bring items in and place them in the box in Gore Hall. Thanks for sharing with those in need.

Pastoral Care Associates
Pastoral Care Associates are fellow 1U members who have been especially trained to provide a confidential, caring presence to congregants undergoing stressful life challenges. Through this minister-extending program, members can receive compassionate care when they are in pain, sick, lonely or struggling with changes. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Associates Coordinator Harriett Smithson.

If you are not receiving the weekly email reminder, please contact ChurchAdministrator@orlandouu.org. A reminder is also posted to the 1U facebook page.

August 2 – Second Harvest Packing/Sorting, 1:00pm, 411 Mercy Drive
This activity is fulfilling, rewarding and fun–a great combo for a Saturday afternoon. Besides, they count on us for the workload they are now carrying–far greater than before. Therefore, I ask you to GO TO THE SITE AND REGISTER FOR August 2 from 1pm-4pm. (GET INVOLVED section: Blue Tab on top, then VOLUNTEER.) When you sign up for the date and shift it’s going to ask you for our group JOIN CODE: A100. This will connect you with the USER GROUP for First Unitarian. Contact Stephanie Garber with any questions. As always, please be sure to wear closed toed shoes and plan to enjoy yourself and your fellow volunteers.
August 31 – Special UU World/Adult RE Session, 9:30am
Wait! Stop! Don’t recycle that UU World just yet. There will be a discussion of the provocative article “I don’t ‘believe in the Seven Principles” by Doug Muder, led by Charlotte Fleming. Read it, think about it, come and share your thoughts. If you don’t have a copy, the article can be found at UUA.org.
October 11 – Campus Tenders’ Volunteer Work Day, 9:00am, 1U Parking Lot
Join us as we tend to and beautify the church campus. Volunteer workdays are now quarterly instead of monthly, and help is always needed to maintain our buildings and grounds. If you can volunteer, email email@example.com.
The homeless are often not who we think they are. They can easily be you and me.
