1U Office Phone System Down
Due to a recent lightning surge, the office phone system is not working at this time. For the immediate future, the very best way to reach the church staff is by email:
Crafty Crafters’ Circle – 6:30pm, Room 9
Church members and friends gather to talk, sew, weave, craft, share, philosophize and just generally enjoy the heck out of everyone’s company until 8:30pm. All are welcome! BYO crafts, games, and conversation.
Second Harvest Packing/Sorting – 1:00pm, 411 Mercy Drive
This activity is fulfilling, rewarding and fun–a great combo for a Saturday afternoon. Besides, they count on us for the workload they are now carrying–far greater than before. We are expected to have 15 volunteers each time and can bring MORE, if we are so fortunate. Second Harvest requires us to register ahead of time. Therefore, I ask you to GO TO THE SITE AND REGISTER FOR August 2 from 1pm-4pm. (GET INVOLVED section: Blue Tab on top, then VOLUNTEER.) When you sign up for the date and shift it’s going to ask you for our group JOIN CODE: A100. This will connect you with the USER GROUP for First Unitarian. Contact Stephanie Garber with any questions. As always, please be sure to wear closed toed shoes and plan to enjoy yourself and your fellow volunteers.
Mystic Grove Lughnasadh Ritual – 7:00pm, EC Assembly Room
Join us for our Egyptian-themed celebration of Lughnasadh. Bring a pot luck dish for feasting after the ritual. All are welcome! More information here. https://www.facebook.com/events/289088171263665/?context=create&source=49

Board of Trustees Meeting, 7:00pm, Hiett Library
The regular meeting of the 1U Board of Trustees is held on the first Monday of each month until 9:00 pm. The meeting is open unless a specific Executive Session is called, which is rare. Note: this is a change from recent years when Board meetings were regularly held on the second Monday.
The Alliance – 10:30am, Gore Hall
The Alliance has received a generous donation of a large jewelry box full of women’s jewelry that belonged to member Margaret Greiber, who died a few years ago. Margaret was a greatly esteemed long-time member of this congregation. She was also a warm and elegant lady. For the next two Sundays (August 3 and 10) we will be showcasing her collection. All items will be on sale. There are over 20 pairs of clip-on earrings as well as many other very nice items, including some of silver and some with semi-precious stones. Please come by and see the collection and help us tell interesting stories about Margaret.
Other Alliance activities include the postponement of the first Tuesday board meeting to the second Tuesday (Aug. 12). Bring your bag lunch to either of these meetings and enjoy your noon hour.

The church fiscal year ended on June 30. All those who have not yet completed their pledge for the previous fiscal year are urged to do so as soon as possible. To help us credit your pledge payment properly, please note in the memo field of your check whether your payment is for the current fiscal year (2014-2015) or the past fiscal year (7/1/2013 – 6/30/2014). If there is no designation, all payments received will be credited to the current fiscal year. If not sure if your pledge is paid-up, still need to pledge for the upcoming fiscal year, or have a question about your pledge? Contact Amy in the church office (email@example.com or 407-898-3621 x0).
Rev. Kathy will be away from the congregation from Wednesday, July 23 through Saturday, August 2. In an emergency, call her cell or the congregation’s main office.
Meet and Greet With Rev Kathy Schmitz
Are you a newcomer to our church? Would you like to meet Rev Kathy, learn more about Unitarian Universalism, and get answers to any questions you may have? If so, the Membership Team invites you to attend a one-hour Meet and Greet on August 10 at 12:15 p.m. in the Hiett Library in Gore Hall.
Furniture for UU Intern
Our Ministerial Intern will be here August 9. We will need to loan her some household furnishings for the year. We already have some items offered, but in case there are choices among items that would fit better in her space, we are posting the full list: Bed (king or queen), couch and/or comfortable chairs, coffee and/or side tables, book shelf. We haven’t asked her about lights, but lamps might be needed. If possible, please send a picture of the items along with your description, to the Internship Committee at: Interncommittee@orlandouu.org
What Feeds Your Soul?
Connecting with people? Helping develop a child’s self-concept? Leading our youth and presenting our UU principles? You’re in the right place! Children’s Religious Education seeks to connect YOU to a positive and rewarding experience as an RE teacher. Kids range in age from preschool through high school. You will serve on a teaching team with others passionate about our youth and will lead once or twice per month. If leading isn’t your cup of tea, volunteer to assist a teacher. No experience necessary. Contact Regina Knabe at RECoordinator@OrlandoUU.org and be an inspiration to a child this year.
Adult RE Help Needed
We would like to continue to offer adult RE at 9:30 in Room 18 when the new program year starts up in September. Anyone who has a burning desire to share any topic related in any way to our Seven Principles or congregational life, on a monthly basis from mid-September through May, please find Charlotte Fleming and share your ideas. We need 4 people, and each person can tap others to lead individual sessions. The possibilities are endless, and the task easy.
Coalition for the Homeless: Immediate Needs
The Coalition for the Homeless has immediate needs for: Underwear and socks (for both men and women), razors, baby wipes, men’s flip flops. Donations are accepted Mon-Sat 9-5 or by appointment at 639 W. Central Blvd., Orlando. NOTE: They do not accept clothing other than as specified.
Continuing Food Drive
We continue the food drive for Catholic Charities Semoran Food Pantry. Please continue to bring items in and place them in the box in Gore Hall. Thanks for sharing with those in need.

Pastoral Care Associates
Pastoral Care Associates are fellow 1U members who have been especially trained to provide a confidential, caring presence to congregants undergoing stressful life challenges. Through this minister-extending program, members can receive compassionate care when they are in pain, sick, lonely or struggling with changes. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Associates Coordinator Harriett Smithson.
The Best Way To Know What Is Going On Around 1U – This Weekly Update.

If you are not receiving the weekly email reminder, please contact ChurchAdministrator@orlandouu.org. A reminder is also posted to the 1U facebook page.

August 16 – Capital Campaign Workshop & 1st Round Building Drawings Review
COME BE PART of an open workshop from 1:30-2:30 focusing on what we should expect as we organize our Capital Campaign. Our UUA Capital Campaign Consultant will meet with the building committee and anyone else who is interested. As our Consultant, we are lucky to have Barry Finkelstein, husband of Roberta Finkelstein, our interim minister from 5 years ago. After his visit, we will go through the first round drawings from our architects, which have incorporated our suggestions to date. There will be opportunities for both committees and individual congregants to give further feedback. As always, if you have any questions or concerns contact Bldgcommunications@orlandouu.org.
August 31 – Special UU World/Adult RE Session, 9:30
Wait! Stop! Don’t recycle that UU World just yet. There will be a discussion of the provocative article “I don’t ‘believe in the Seven Principles” by Doug Muder, led by Charlotte Fleming. Read it, think about it, come and share your thoughts. If you don’t have a copy, the article can be found at UUA.org.
October 11 – Campus Tenders’ Volunteer Work Day, 9:00am, 1U Parking Lot
Join us as we tend to and beautify the church campus. Volunteer workdays are now quarterly instead of monthly, and help is always needed to maintain our buildings and grounds. If you can volunteer, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
