Discussions on Escalating Inequality and Homelessness Being Planned

Watch for several opportunities to be in conversation with others around Escalating Inequality, the current UUA Congregational Study/Action Issue (CSAI). Let’s consider ways to engage this issue. How can we support the renew commitment to address issues of homelessness in Central Florida?  How can we be more effective in our relationships with other organizations such as those supporting farm workers? If you would like to be on a direct email list for those particularly interested in these issues, please let us know at socialjustice@orlandouu.org.

Toy Drive for Hope Community Center

The Hope Community Center has asked First Unitarian to help support their annual Christmas Toy Sale for the Apopka farm workers. This event is part of a 36-year tradition, and is unique in that the new toys are gathered by HCC to be sold to the farm workers and their families in the setting of a two day affordable toy sale. The money collected each year is used to support programming at HCC. They are asking for unwrapped gifts valued in the $10 or more range such as dolls, balls (of all kinds), art supplies, trucks and cars and board games. A decorated box will be available on the stage in Gore Hall for the toys. We are starting early as they want all items delivered to the HCC by 12/12/14. Please support this special event for the Apopka farm workers!

Share the Plate Update

For the month of December, we’ll be sharing the plate with two community partners. Our Christmas Eve Share-the-Plate collection will be donated to Zebra Coalition, a network of local social service groups who provide help and support to at-risk LGBT+ youth. Our fourth Sunday Share-the-Plate collection on December 28 will be donated to Shepherd’s Hope, an interfaith effort to deliver health care to the uninsured of Central Florida.

Building the Dream Update

We are still fine tuning the financials on the building, setting up financial systems as well as bringing in an arborist to make sure that the big tree outside of our Sanctuary will be safe with the new plans. And some of our Lead Donors will be asked for their Capital Campaign pledges in the next few weeks—stay tuned for results.

Become a Home Hospitality Host

On occasion, 1U has the opportunity to host other UUs for events like District Assembly, Choir Festival, District meetings, and other events. Some of our fellow UUs who come into town for a day or two to join us and/or use our facilities appreciate being welcomed into our homes for the night to cut down on hotel expense while getting to know us. If you have space in your home to host a guest or two, please consider joining in this Hospitality offering!  Email 1uhomehospitality@gmail.com to be added to our database to be contacted about opportunities as they arise.

For the Holidays (and Beyond) from UUSC: thegoodbuy.com

As we prepare to purchase gifts for the upcoming holiday season, say good-bye to shopping that’s bad for workers and the earth.  Say hello to sustainable living at thegoodbuy.com.  Proceeds from the Good Buy underwrite human rights programs around the world through the UUSC, so you can make a difference with each purchase. Questions? Contact Steph Garber.

Continuing Food Drive

We continue the food drive for Catholic Charities Semoran Food Pantry. Please continue to bring items in and place them in the box in Gore Hall. Thanks for sharing with those in need.

Pastoral Care Associates

Pastoral Care Associates are fellow 1U members who have been especially trained to provide a confidential, caring presence to congregants undergoing stressful life challenges. Through this minister-extending program, members can receive compassionate care when they are in pain, sick, lonely or struggling with changes. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Associates Coordinator Harriett Smithson.
