WHW 2015 Team Wants YOU!
Welcome Home Wednesdays (WHW) is a time for all ages to take a midweek break: enjoy a tasty meal, good conversation, a moment of inspiration and reflection at an evening service, and an engaging class or discussion group. 1U’s WHW organizing team needs volunteers to help plan and arrange classes and teachers, menus and food vendors, and logistics for setup and cleanup. If you’d like to take part in setting up the next in 1U’s series of Wednesday adventures, starting now, please email WHW@Orlandouu.org, write “I’d like to be part of the WHW team” in the subject line and send us your name and phone number, along with any area of special organizing or planning interest.
Share the Plate Update
Our Christmas Eve Share-the-Plate collection will be donated to Zebra Coalition, a network of local social service groups who provide help and support to at-risk LGBT+ youth. Zebra Coalition’s mission is to foster hope, dignity and self-respect in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and all youth (LGBT+) and to provide them an opportunity to grow up in a safe, healthy and supportive environment. Our fourth Sunday Share-the-Plate collection on December 28 will be donated to Shepherd’s Hope, an interfaith effort to deliver health care to the uninsured of Central Florida. Please extend your holiday spirit of generosity to include these worthy causes.
Say Hello to Sustainable Shopping at thegoodbuy.com
Say good-bye to shopping that’s bad for workers and the earth. Proceeds from the Good Buy underwrite human rights programs around the world through the UUSC, so you can make a difference with each purchase. Questions? Contact Steph Garber.
Give Pennies for Publix to Support Farmworkers
The holiday season is a good time to use a highly effective tool in the ongoing effort to get Publix to sign the Fair Food pledge with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. Tape a penny to a note that reads:
I want to see Publix sign the Fair Food pledge with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers so farmworkers can have better pay and decent working conditions. Please use my pennies so Justice is done.
By signing the Fair Food pledge Publix will commit to pay one extra cent per pound for tomatoes they sell in their store, thus helping to ensure that these farmworkers get better pay and decent working conditions. More info here. Create your own notes or download here our already prepared document for printing out multiple notes at once. Tape a penny to each note, take them with you on each Publix shopping trip, and hand your cashier the penny’d note to urge Publix to support CIW.
Fair Trade Goods Every Sunday–Noon, Gore Hall
Fair Trade coffee and other goods are available every Sunday at the back of Gore Hall after the 11:00 service. Sale of coffee, chocolate and tea benefits small independent growers, UUSC and our church. Think about these as thoughtful gifts.
Discussions on Escalating Inequality and Homelessness Being Planned
Watch for several opportunities to be in conversation with others around Escalating Inequality, the current UUA Congregational Study/Action Issue (CSAI). Let’s consider ways to engage this issue. How can we support the renew commitment to address issues of homelessness in Central Florida? How can we be more effective in our relationships with other organizations such as those supporting farm workers? If you would like to be on a direct email list for those particularly interested in these issues, please let us know at email@example.com.
Continuing Food Drive
We continue the food drive for Catholic Charities Semoran Food Pantry. Please continue to bring items in and place them in the box in Gore Hall. Thanks for sharing with those in need.
Join Justice GoogleGroup
Did you receive an e-mail that gives you information so you can attend, march, protest, support, or learn about an activity that may appreciate your 1U involvement? To get immediate messages or a daily summary, and to share Social Justice information and events in central Florida and beyond that you learn about, join 1U Justice googlegroup. Email your request to join, including the name and e-mail address you want used. (We just changed the e-mail address, so if you tried to join before and haven’t gotten the information–our apologies. Please try again.)
Become a Home Hospitality Host
On occasion, 1U has the opportunity to host other UUs for events like District Assembly, Choir Festival, District meetings, and other events. Some of our fellow UUs who come into town for a day or two to join us and/or use our facilities appreciate being welcomed into our homes for the night to cut down on hotel expense while getting to know us. If you have space in your home to host a guest or two, please consider joining in this Hospitality offering! Email firstname.lastname@example.org to be added to our database to be contacted about opportunities as they arise.
Pastoral Care Associates
Pastoral Care Associates are fellow 1U members who have been especially trained to provide a confidential, caring presence to congregants undergoing stressful life challenges. Through this minister-extending program, members can receive compassionate care when they are in pain, sick, lonely or struggling with changes. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Associates Coordinator Harriett Smithson.
The Best Way To Know What Is Going On Around 1U – This Weekly Update.

If you are not receiving the weekly email reminder, please contact ChurchAdministrator@orlandouu.org. A reminder is also posted to the 1U facebook page.
