Indigent populations here in the US get 25% of CTW output, with 75% going to the needy around the world. Cleanliness helps prevent the spread of disease, and they have been very successful in their efforts. CTW would welcome a 1U group of volunteers at their Orlando facility right off I-4, not far from 1U. Can you join us for the 2-hour shift and make a real difference in the lives of many? Closed toed shoes required. RSVP to Steph Garber at firstname.lastname@example.org so CTW can be alerted as to how many of us to expect.

Annual All-Church Rummage Sale September 18 & 19
Each year, 1U has a rummage sale as a fundraiser for the church. It’s also one of the ways we live our UU Principles. How? By recycling & re-using! This reduces the amount of “junque” sent to the dump.
How can you participate? By donating items**! We accept new and slightly used items– clothing, small appliances, jewelry, books, luggage, kitchen items, children’s toys, small furniture, art, etc., etc. – that are in reasonably good shape, clean, and have all their parts. You can drop them off on Sundays (see Charlotte or Jean at the Alliance tables in Gore Hall during the 12:00 Social Hour) or drop them off during the week from 8 – 2pm (call the church office first to make sure that Amy is there to accept your items). Unfortunately, there are some items we can’t accept (large furniture, large appliances, computers and printers).
We also need your help to host the sale:
- To set-up the sale (unpacking items, sorting, displaying and pricing on Thursday, September 17 from 8am – 4pm)
- To help shoppers during the sale (cashiers, packers, general helpers on Friday and Saturday, September 18 & 19)
- To help packing up all leftover items after the sale (on Saturday, September 19 from 3 – 3:45/4:00pm).
These are short term commitments – a few hours or more will do! Questions? Interested in volunteering? Contact Amy (churchadministrator@OrlandoUU.org or 407-898-3621).
Please Help Select Share The Plate Candidates (Deadline: August 16)
An important part of the 1U social justice program is Share The Plate (STP), where once per month we give the offering collection to a local organization that shares our values. For the 2015-16 church year we will be choosing the STP candidates at the August 23 and 30 Opportunities Fiesta events. If you know of an organization that should be considered, please provide the organization name to Dan Homblette by Sunday, August 16 (garden@OrlandoUU.org and please write “Share the Plate” in the subject field). Please provide a two- or three-sentence description of what the group does, and as the provider of this information, we will ask that you be the host for the group if they are selected. Hosting involves facilitating a representative of the organization at Adult RE on the Sunday of their STP. We will be choosing 8 organizations for STP this year, sharing the plate one time with each.

Pastoral Care Associates
Pastoral Care Associates are fellow 1U members who have been especially trained to provide a confidential, caring presence to congregants undergoing stressful life challenges. Through this minister-extending program, members can receive compassionate care when they are in pain, sick, lonely or struggling with changes. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Associates Coordinator Harriett Smithson at pastoralassociates@OrlandoUU.org.
1U Caring Circle
Members of the Caring Circle offer kind, practical, tangible efforts to other church members who may be experiencing significant joys, concerns, sorrows, or changes in their lives. Monthly contact people follow up on Joys and Concerns expressed in Sunday worship, as well as notices from the minister or other church members, about short-term circumstances that may need attention. Other members serve in providing phone calls, greeting cards, rides to church events, medical appointments, meals for a while, pet care, etc. Please contact our Caring Circle coordinator Jenny Lockington at CaringCircle@OrlandoUU.org for details or to participate.
The Best Way to Know What Is Going On Around 1U – This Weekly Update

Become a Home Hospitality Host
On occasion, 1U has the opportunity to host other UUs for events like District Assembly, Choir Festival, District meetings, and other events. Some of our fellow UUs who come into town for a day or two to join us and/or use our facilities appreciate being welcomed into our homes for the night to cut down on hotel expense while getting to know us. If you have space in your home to host a guest or two, please consider joining in this Hospitality offering! Email firstname.lastname@example.org to be added to our database to be contacted about opportunities as they arise.
