9:30 am in the Library: “Filthy Dreamers” with Bob Leger

Who should control what is taught in our public universities? Educators? Citizens? Or politicians? In the late 1920s Florida State College for Women was the only public university that allowed women to enroll, and it found itself at the center of an ideological battle over faith and science in the classroom. The outcome depended on the college president, professors, and students, who defended their right to academic freedom. The religious fundamentalist who launched the attack called all of them Filthy Dreamers.

Building The Dream Update Meeting – 12:30, Hiett Library

We received wonderful news this past Monday: First Green Bank forwarded a commitment letter for the financing of our campus renovation project! Efforts are coming together as we work closely with our contractor MPaul and our designer, and take next steps with financing. Please plan on coming to today’s monthly meeting to get the latest updates and share in the journey with us – we want to continue getting feedback from the congregation. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to drop us an email at bldgcommunications@orlandouu.org.

3rd Sunday Movie Nite – 6:30 pm, EC Room 9

Come join us each month on 3rd Sundays in Room 9 for movie night fun. It’s BYO dinner, watch, and discuss! This month we screen “Ladyhawke.” Plot summary: Philipe Gastone, a thief, escapes from the dungeon at Aquila, sparking a manhunt. He is nearly captured when Captain Navarre befriends him. Navarre has been hunted by the Bishop’s men for two years, ever since he escaped with the Lady Isabeau whom the Bishop lusted after. The Bishop has placed a curse on them that causes Navarre to be a wolf during the night and Isabeau to be a hawk during the day. Navarre insists that Philipe help him re-enter the city to help him kill the heavily guarded Bishop. Learn more here.

Pride Parade Housing & Ride Assistance Needed

Because of Pulse Orlando Strong Keep on Dancing! Orlando Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence** are coming from other Abbeys to our Pride Parade! We’re asking folks with generosity of spirit to help us. If you can dedicate a bed and/or a ride please respond. We will match you up‼

The Pride Parade is Saturday, October 8. Most folks may arrive Friday and leave Sunday. Some may extend their visit. Sandy Cawthern (1U member and Fully Professed Sister) is 1U’s point person for this effort. She will be happy to answer questions as you decide whether to extend hospitality. Please contact her with your offers at: sistersassist@gmail.com. In the body of the email please include information regarding number of  available beds, days you are willing to host, whether or not you can offer transportation, your address and contact information, whether or not you have pets or allergies. You will receive a response from Sandy shortly afterwards.  The Sisters are from all over the world so this is a grand opportunity for networking for justice and friendships! What a lovely connection! Wouldn’t it be serendipitous if 1U and the Sisters were next to each other in the marching order?

** The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are an order of postmodern nuns, dedicated to the promulgation of omniversal joy, and the expiation of stigmatic guilt. (Mission statement: We work to raise money for charitable organizations, fight for queer rights and visibility, do safer sex outreach, bring joy and unity to our community, and strive diligently to keep our sense of humor, never taking ourselves so seriously that we forget to have fun. We gladly welcome all races, creeds, genders and sexual orientations.) The Orlando Sisters are a 1U-sponsored group, meeting on Second Mondays in Gore Hall at 7:30pm. All are welcome to visit.

Help Keep Our Pulpit Beautiful!

Pass a wildflower field en route to church? Love to create floral arrangements? Want to make an almost effortless contribution to our community on the occasional Sunday? We even provide the vases. Join the Flowers Team and help provide pulpit flowers & greenery for a few services a year! On the Sundays of your choice you can supply cut fresh flowers, a potted plant or flower, an orchid, wildflowers, something from your garden or that of a neighbor (after you are given access)– even fine silk arrangements. Then you can take it home, give it away, or leave it in Gore Hall for church visitors to enjoy. To learn all the details or to join the team right now, email Karla Kizzort at flowers@orlandouu.org.

September 22 – CIW Wendy’s Boycott Summit

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) will be holding a summit in Immokalee from September 22-25 to discuss/energize/plan for further action on the Wendy’s boycott called by the farm workers to get Wendy’s to join the Fair Food Program. We are hoping that a member of First Unitarian would be willing to attend the event as an ally and bring back to 1U the news and actions that are planned for the near future. Please go to their website for more information.  We have been working with the CIW on their campaign with Publix for the past 7 years. This will continue, but we need to better understand the specifics of the boycott in order to be most effective. If you are interested please contact Dan Homblette. You can email him at CIWEventinfo@OrlandoUU.org.

Ongoing Activities, Needs & Resources

Missed a Sunday?

Audio recordings for most Sunday sermons are online here. Just click and listen.

Fair Trade Goods Every Sunday – Noon, Gore Hall

Fair Trade coffee and other goods are available Sundays at the back of Gore Hall after the 11:00 service. Sales of coffee, chocolate and tea benefit small independent growers, UUSC and our church. Think about these as thoughtful gifts!

First Sunday Fellowship

1U members and friends gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, Conway, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. If you are interested in learning more or finding a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. Times and locations vary.

Minister’s Day Off

Rev. Kathy is changing her day off to Fridays. Thursday will be her writing day, which means she will typically be focused on worship preparation. Therefore, her most available days (aside from Sunday) will be Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Please Do Not Leave Packages of Any Kind Around the Campus Buildings

If you are bringing items for the Alliance or any other activity, please plan ahead. Make sure a staff person or other church member will already be at the church to take the package(s) and put them in the right place. Thanks for your cooperation.

Through this minister-extending program, members can receive compassionate care when they are in pain, sick, lonely or struggling with changes. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Coordinator at pastoralassociates@OrlandoUU.org.
