It’s that time of the year again! As we have done in the past, we are now soliciting organizations for this next year. Organization and sponsor information will be collected this week and will be compiled for voting on September 3. We will select eight organizations and Rev. Kathy and Children’s RE select the other two. Follow the link or stop by at 1U Central on Sunday to submit a nomination form.

Fall Program Sign Ups Coming Soon

Next week we will begin sign-ups for two returning programs.

Beloved Conversations: Meditations on Race and Ethnicity provides a supportive small group opportunity for participants to self-reflection and deepening understanding. The program will begin with a required opening retreat the evening of Friday, October 27 and all day October 28. Participants will then be in small groups that will meet (approximately) weekly for eight two-hour sessions.

Covenant Groups are a form of Small Group Ministry in which groups of approximately 10 people commit to meet monthly (October 2017–May 2018) Gatherings are 90 minutes and are facilitated by a trained “anchor.”

Building The Dream Update

Efforts in Gore Hall are coming right along. Final coats of paint are going on in the new classrooms. The foyer ceiling tiles have been cleaned, repaired or replaced and the entire foyer area has been painted, including the ceilings. The bathroom vanities are being resurfaced. Grinding of the terrazzo floor will be completed this week. We’re getting close! See photos here. We’ll work towards getting new photos soon!

The latest Contingency and Fundraising List can be found here – please considering helping us complete these items.  You can donate on Sundays, by check or online (mark that it is “for the building“). Have questions?  Have questions?  Feel free to drop us an email and let us know.

No Opportunity Fiesta This Year

Please note that this year, because of space considerations, we have decided not to attempt an Opportunity Fiesta, which has been an annual late-August chance to learn about various ways to connect and volunteers at 1U’s. We will look for other ways to promote the various program as we move into the fall. We hope to have documents with some key dates and theme info out within the week.

Water Communion and a Return to Double Services September 17

Sunday, September 10, is the final single worship service of the summer. We celebrate our coming together as a community after a summer of travels and activities. Children will join adults in the sanctuary for the entire worship service. Everyone is invited to bring a bit of water representing their summer to add to our communal bowl symbolizing the way our individual lives flow together to create 1U. The following week, on Sunday, September 17, we return to our full schedule with services at both 9:30 and 11:00 am and kick off the new Children’s Religious Education year.

We exercise and address the many issues surrounding falls: our individual concerns, our fall-ty habits, how to accomplish events we will someday find challenging and how to protect ourselves in and after a fall at home/in public.  A new 8 week course will be held onWednesdays, from September 13 through November 1,  from 2-4 pm (with snacks) in 1U’s Studio (in the Enrichment Center). Ongoing Activities, Needs & Resources

Pastoral Care Associates

These can be challenging and difficult times as we try to understand what is happening in the world and how it relates to our personal lives. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Coordinator at pastoralassociates@OrlandoUU.org.

Help Keep Our Pulpit Beautiful!

Have you noticed the decorative flora at the pulpit during Sunday services? Simple, beautiful and log-falling easy for anyone to do! Do you grow flowers or ornamental shrubs? Pass a wildflower field en route to church? Love to create floral arrangements? Want to make an almost effortless contribution to our community on the occasional Sunday? We even provide the vases. Join the Flowers Team and help provide pulpit flowers & greenery for a few services a year! On the Sundays of your choice you can supply cut fresh flowers, a potted plant or flower, an orchid, wildflowers, something from your garden or that of a neighbor (after you are given access)– even fine silk arrangements. Then you can take it home, give it away, or leave it in Gore Hall for church visitors to enjoy. To learn all the details or to join the team right now, email Karla Kizzort at flowers@orlandouu.org.

Join 1U A/V Team

Want to learn about sound systems, or how to present a slide show or video? Then the 1U Audio/Visual team is for you! You don’t need to be an expert to join in the fun. Personalized training is provided, and you can polish your skills as you go. Contact us at audioteam@orlandouu.org, or you can always just show up at the A/V room right after service to chat. More info here.

Fair Trade Goods Every Sunday – Noon, Assembly Room

Fair Trade coffee and other goods are available Sundays at the back of Gore Hall after the 11:00 service. Sales of coffee, chocolate and tea benefit small independent growers, UUSC and our church. Think about these as thoughtful gifts!

First Sunday Fellowship

1U members and friends gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, Conway, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. If you are interested in learning more or finding a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. Times and locations vary.

Give By Text

You can now make a contribution to First Unitarian Church with a quick text message! Simply send a text to 407-456-7082 with the amount you’d like to contribute. Make sure to include the dollar sign before the amount (for example: $25).  NOTE: Do not place a space between the dollar sign and the dollar amount.  Within a few minutes, you’ll be sent a text with a link to register. Click on the link and enter your cardholder name and credit or debit card information. Once your registration is complete, you will receive a text verification and a receipt via email. For future giving, simply send a text with the amount you wish to give, and it will process automatically!  To text contribution to individual funds include the text code in your text message:

Become a Home Hospitality Host

On occasion, 1U has the opportunity to host other UUs for events like District Assembly, Choir Festival, District meetings, and other events.
