Children & Youth Religious Education This Week

Last Sunday all our classes, from Seuss to Youth, met together to reflect on the past and discuss hopes for the future. Mary Murphy, Ken Dukes and Julia Chinnock made these activities meaningful using meditation, yoga and sand art. A special thank you to Karen Ramberg and John Hartgering (after a very late flight!) for their willingness to help when needed! This Sunday, January 5, our regular schedule resumes.

In our Nursery: Heather Coddington and Emma Dixon report that last Sunday the children in the nursery were very focused on pushing the shopping cart around; so many groceries needed!

In Dr. Seuss (ages 3-6): The Grinch may make an appearance in early 2020.  Be prepared!

In Star Wars (ages 6-9): This Sunday the focus will be on a Jedi’s sense of sight. Star Wars teachers, don’t forget to sign up for teaching and assisting spots for 2020! The Jedi Academy will launch 2020 with an exploration of our five senses and The Force.

In Harry Potter (ages 9-13): Team Leader Rhonda Rodriguez has a request: “We need more social justice warriors to join the Harry Potter RE team and help our kids fight Horcruxes! Contact me (info in online Member Directory) if you’re interested, and join us for a team breakfast of donuts, coffee and curriculum planning at 9:00 am, before services on Jan. 12.”

In Youth RE & Youth Group (High School): We return to High School Covenant group on Jan 5.  Youth advisers, remember to sign up on the Spring 2020 semester calendar!

New to 1U? After Time for All Ages, you are welcome to accompany your child to the Labyrinth outside our Sanctuary. Our religious education teachers will provide guidance about the best class for your child and answer any questions you have.

January Worship Theme:  What does it mean to be a people of POSSIBILITY?

Jan. 12      Living Our Story, Rev. Samuel Schaal, Transition Minister

How does the narrative of our life shape us?  Who have we been?

The congregational History Wall experience begins today after worship in Gore Hall and continues for several Sundays.

Jan. 19     A Network of Mutuality, Rev. Samuel Schaal, Transition Minister

Martin Luther King called the nation to racial justice, pushing beyond white leaders’ discomfort. Likewise, the minister of First Unitarian of Orlando in that era, John C. Fuller, advocated a theology of equality that burst through the polite discourse of the day. Both men saw the possibilities of radical mutuality. The Chalice Choir performs.

Jan. 26     The Congregation is the Curriculum, Michele Grove, D.Min., Interim Religious                          Education Consultant

Religious education does not just happen in a Sunday morning class.  It happens in worship, committee meetings, choir rehearsal, potluck dinners, fundraising events, and social action gatherings. What are the possibilities when a congregation elevates religious education as a vital component of congregational life? Michele Townsend Grove is 1U’s new interim religious education consultant. This introduces future conversations on the future of 1U’s religious education identity. On Friday and Saturday this weekend, she will facilitate conversations around 1U’s current and future religious education program.

Sam, the congregation is invited to tell the stories of the congregation’s odyssey through the years. Notes on our remembered history will remain posted on the wall through the month. All are welcome:  old-timers, newcomers and guests.  This is part of our transitional work in answering the question: “Who have we been?”

1U Auction News

Planning has begun for 1U’s Hearts and Hands 2020 auction on Saturday evening, Feb. 22!  Be sure to mark it on your calendar now. We already have some exciting donations, including Karen Ramberg’s condo for a week in Lido Key, 4 hours of window washing by Rene Stutzman, kayaking for 2 with Ann Mount, and a pair of tickets to The Capitol Steps on March 12 given by Lindsay Stroh.

We are looking for more donations. We need gift cards, invites to dinner in your home, home baked cookies made and delivered, theater tickets…anything  that you can give from your heart or your hands to help support the work of 1U!  Note: please NO  clothing, furniture, hanging wall art, or “garage sale” items. Also, no more than three of a similar item per donor.

Donation forms (for tangible items and for services/events) can be downloaded from the Auction webpage, and they are also available either by email (auction@orlandouu.org) or on Sunday at Gaby’s table. You can return the completed forms at Gaby’s table, or you can send them to the church office. Please let us know what you can give.

Co-chairs Suzanne Oberholtzer and Carolina Lofgren are also looking for people who want to be involved: obtaining donations from businesses and members, helping with food, beverages, decorations, publicity, cleanup, etc. It takes a congregation to put on one of these events! Contact us at Auction@orlandouu.org! Any of us on the committee can use more hearts and hands to get this effort moving.

1U Collaborates on Food Pantry Needs with Joy MCC Church

1U is embarking on a new collaboration with Joy MCC ((JMCC) church, to support their food distribution ministries. Possibilities are varied, including contributing requested food, helping at their food pantry (they feed 100 families a week), assist with creating holiday meals, cash support, and education. The Joy MCC staff and volunteers involved in this work are eager and grateful for any participation on our part. Consider being part of a team to liaison and plan with Joy MCC. Team tasks could include, for starters, forwarding JMCC requests to 1U congregants, arranging for collection (they have agreed to pick up food as needed), planning for education opportunities, sharing information about volunteer opportunities.
