New Office & Program Assistant

We are pleased to introduce our new Office & Program Assistant, Gaby Cabrera. Gaby will be working with our minister, Rev. Kathy, and our Church Administrator, Amy Fairweather. The 20-hour position was approved for one year in the 2015-2016 Operating Budget. The extra help will be much appreciated in this year of much extra activity related to our upcoming renovation. Gaby will be present on Sundays from 9 am to 1 pm and will staff a “1U Central” table at the east end of Gore Hall to offer support for welcome, information, and sign ups. Here’s a little introduction from Gaby:

Hi everyone! My name is Luz Gabriela Cabrera and I typically go by ‘Gaby.’ I’m excited to join 1U as the office and program assistant! Here’s just a little about me: I moved to the USA from Mexico in 1999 and have lived in the Orlando area ever since – I sure haven’t gotten used to the Florida humidity yet! I’m a recent graduate from Rollins College where I double-majored in Psychology and Religious Studies with a minor in Sex, Women, & Gender Studies. While at Rollins, I served as the president of the Latin American Student Association as well as Voices 4 Women, the feminist group on campus, organizing events related to social issues. I also served two years as the heritage and culture student program coordinator for the Office of Multicultural Affairs on campus. I enjoy long walks on the beach, chocolate, and coffee. I am really looking forward to meeting you all and becoming a part of the community here!

A Message from the Nominating Committee

It’s once again the time of year that we think about the growth of our church leadership, and we turn to YOU, our members, for suggestions of other members who might be interested serving on our governing Board. There are many ways to contribute to 1U; board service is a very substantial one. While experience on a board is great, the most important criteria is commitment to 1U during this exciting, challenging time of facility birth and renewal as well as the many other projects 1U has in work – why not you?

Contact a member of the Nominating Committee with your questions and ideas: Jane Austin, Andy Berry, Gregg Buckingham, Rachel Gardiner, Libby Jackson, Jean Siegfried

Share the Plate Update

Our first shared plate collection of 2016 will be donated on January 17 to Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida (PPSWCF). For almost 100 years, Planned Parenthood has been America’s most trusted provider of reproductive health care. In 2013, nearly 80,000 women, men and teens turned to Planned Parenthood in Florida for health care services, including lifesaving cancer screenings, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, contraception services, and abortion care. Planned Parenthood’s primary goal is to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies through preventive services and education.
