Parking Plan for Today and Other Busy Days
Grass parking north of the Enrichment Center is now allowed for those with special needs. Able-bodied members should continue to park off-site. Or you can walk, take the bus, car pool or ride a bike. (The bike rack is now located on the north side of the Enrichment Center near the office.) The parking map is on our website; get a copy and put it in your car. And put a flashlight in your car, too, in case you come to an evening event.

Come shop at the Nora Staton bookstore before AND after church today. You’ll find a large assortment of UU-related titles in many categories. The bookstore is open quarterly this year, and this is the Summer event. We have some excellent purchase awards: Unitarian Universalist tote bag, bumper sticker, or UU Principles and Purposes 8″ x 10″ poster free with a $30 purchase! Women UUs Relishing Life (WUURL) heads to Antonio’s Restaurant, Maitland, at 11:30 am, then at 1:00 pm proceeds to the Holocaust Centre to view 3 new exhibits. The new exhibits include: Embracing the Dream, A Place for All People, and The Tuskegee Airmen.

RUUM Annual Planning Meeting — 11:30 am
RUUM, the Retired Unitarian Universalist Men’s group will be holding our Annual Planning Meeting today. RUUM holds one regular informal meeting on the 1st Thursday of every month for an opportunity to share what is happening in each of our lives, to discuss business and scheduling, or just to share ideas and thoughts for the future. We bring our lunches, enjoy camaraderie, and chat informally around the table for about an hour and a half; sometimes we even suggest a topic in advance.
On the 3rd Thursday of the month we take a field trip, organized in advance by one of our participants, to a local destination of interest. (For example, last year we had a guided tour inside City of Orlando Fire House #1, and had a docent-lead tour of the Morse Museum to be amazed by their extensive Tiffany glass collection.) Today’s Planning Meeting will kick around suggestions for the coming 12 months.
Most of us are members or friends of 1U and participation in our field trips is always open to wives and partners. Requests for additional information can be sent to RUUM@orlandouu.org to the attention of Craig Alig.

August 13 Celebration of Jamie Sterrett’s Retirement: How You Can Participate
To acknowledge & celebrate Music Director Jamie Sterrett’s contributions to the music ministry at 1U, the August 13 service will be one of music and memories, followed by a “Happy Retirement” snacks reception in the Assembly Room, followed by cake and festivities in the Studio.
We could use your help in these ways:
-Provide brief written remembrances of, and good wishes for, Jamie. These can be given to Gaby at the 1U Central table in the Assembly Room on Sundays. They can also be emailed to Karla at firstname.lastname@example.org. These messages will be given to Jamie after the service.
-Provide digital copies of photos of Jamie.
-Bring finger foods for the reception. (Be mindful of the fact that we have no real kitchen facilities and very limited space.)
-Sign up to help with setup and/or cleanup for the reception.
-If you would like to offer a musical performance, or join in one that is already planned, please contact Karla at the above email address.
Changes in Music Staffing
In light of the upcoming retirement of Jamie Sterrett, 1U’s Music Director of 15 years, the Personnel Committee and Rev. Kathy have been in conversation about a path forward. In early June, Personnel Committee members convened three input sessions to hear from members of the congregation. These sessions were well attended and provided helpful input. Thank you to all who participated.
Based on the information received, as well as past experience with staff transitions, and after consultation with the Board of Trustees, we have decided that the next stage for our journey will be an interim period for the music program. 1U has used interim periods for the transitions of both the Minister and the Director of Religious Education. One difference is that, in those situations, the departing staff person and the person to be brought in were anticipated to do essentially the same role. In the current situation, it is not clear what the specific needs are going to be. Additionally, we want to consider program needs within the constellation of the remaining music staff, Aubrey Connelly-Candelario, Choir Director, and Brittany Jean-Pierre, Accompanist. Various ways of organizing things going forward have been brought up. For this reason, we would like to allow ourselves six months to experiment with possibilities and see what emerges.
To this end, we have asked Aubrey to temporarily assume additional responsibilities for six months. These include coordinating 1U’s musical talent to ensure coverage for non-choir Sundays, offering support to this talent as needed, supervising the accompanist, and coordinating with Rev. Kathy and other worship leaders. Effective August 1, Aubrey’s hours and compensation will be appropriately adjusted. His title will remain Choir Director. Additionally, adjustments to the accompanist’s hours and responsibilities will be negotiated as needed. These changes are expected to take effect on August 15th.
While there will be conversations and discernment during the six month period, by February 1st, the congregation can expect formal notification of next steps in determining the needed constellation for our music staff. If you have questions or just want to chat, Rev. Kathy and members of the Personnel Committee (Rose Beiler, Cindy Schleier, Adena Boris, and Lou King) are happy to hear from you. We thank you in advance for your goodwill and grace as we discover together how we can continue to grow our vibrant music program at 1U.
Rev. Kathy Away for all of August
Rev. Kathy is headed to NH for all of August to be with her mother who has recently begun a relationship with hospice. Plans have fallen quickly into place to ensure excellent worship and smooth congregational operations during her absence. Building The Dream Update
Lots of work is going on! Gore Hall wall framing is in, AC duct is in, work has started on the roof, and electrical and data lines work continues. Finishing touches continue in the Enrichment Center as well. Check out the photos here. In the background we’re having frequent meetings with MPaul to work through multitudes of decisions on FFE (Furniture, Fixtures, & Equipment).
It’s worth noting again – some very generous donations have allowed us to fully meet our $10,000 Challenge Grant! We so appreciate the support – thank you! We still have several items on our Contingency and Fundraising List, including grinding our beautiful Gore Hall terrazzo floor and creating the kitchen pantry. A small area of the terrazzo floor has been completed as a sample to help us decide – it will be stunningly beautiful if we can raise the funds. Please consider donating to a specific item or to the general fund. You can donate on Sundays, by check or online (mark that it is “for the building“). Have questions? Fiscal Year Ending, Pledge Reminder
The new church fiscal year begins July 1, 2017. If you have not yet completed your pledge for the previous fiscal year (July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017), please do so as soon as possible. For any contribution you make, please note in the memo field of your check what it is for (i.e., 2017-2018 (current fiscal year as of July 1), 2016-2017 (last fiscal year), Capital pledge, etc.). Help Public Defenders Help Their Clients
The public defenders’ office has need for professional clothing for their clients when they appear in court. They can use anything professional for men or women. If you have some gently used clothes, please give them to OLIVIA at:

Please call Olivia the morning of the day you will be coming down. You may get a receipt if you itemize a list of what you are giving along with your name and address and put it with the clothing. Have you noticed the decorative flora at the pulpit during Sunday services? Simple, beautiful and log-falling easy for anyone to do! Do you grow flowers or ornamental shrubs? Pass a wildflower field en route to church? Love to create floral arrangements? Want to make an almost effortless contribution to our community on the occasional Sunday? We even provide the vases. Join the Flowers Team and help provide pulpit flowers & greenery for a few services a year! On the Sundays of your choice you can supply cut fresh flowers, a potted plant or flower, an orchid, wildflowers, something from your garden or that of a neighbor (after you are given access)– even fine silk arrangements. Then you can take it home, give it away, or leave it in Gore Hall for church visitors to enjoy. Fair Trade Goods Every Sunday – Noon, Assembly Room
Fair Trade coffee and other goods are available Sundays at the back of Gore Hall after the 11:00 service. Sales of coffee, chocolate and tea benefit small independent growers, UUSC and our church. Think about these as thoughtful gifts!
First Sunday Fellowship
1U members and friends gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, Conway, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. 1U Caring Circle
Members of the Caring Circle offer kind, practical, tangible efforts to other church members who may be experiencing significant joys, concerns, sorrows, or changes in their lives. Monthly contact people follow up on Joys and Concerns expressed in Sunday worship, as well as notices from the minister or other church members, about short-term circumstances that may need attention. Other members serve in providing phone calls, greeting cards, rides to church events, medical appointments, meals for a while, pet care, etc. Please contact our Caring Circle coordinator Kathy Homblette at CaringCircle@OrlandoUU.org for details or to participate.

On occasion, 1U has the opportunity to host other UUs for events like District Assembly, Choir Festival, District meetings, and other events. Some of our fellow UUs who come into town for a day or two to join us and/or use our facilities appreciate being welcomed into our homes for the night to cut down on hotel expense while getting to know us. If you have space in your home to host a guest or two, please consider joining in this Hospitality offering!
