Moon Circle Registration Open — Online

Unlike our Solar celebrations that are Open Circles and and welcome all ages any time as “drop in” attendants, our Lunar celebrations are organized differently. Lunar Ritual is a hybrid model that meets once a month on 4th Fridays. The first hour is something like a covenant group.  We are currently taking inspiration from “Gatherings for Goddess” by B. Melusine Mihaltes, and each month examining a different deity and the ideas they represent.  The second hour is lunar ritual. Email mysticgrove@orlandouu.org to register. Class size is limited to 10 adults. Tuition for the series of 6 is $30. One full scholarship and two half scholarships available. Details at https://mysticgrovecfl.wordpress.com/resources/lunar-rituals/.

BYO Craft Circle — 7:00 pm, Assembly Room

Looking for a low stress activity? Want to meet creative people? Come join us for crafting and fellowship once a month at the BYO Project craft circle! Facebook RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/381170952392297/.

Director of Children and Youth Ministries

We are delighted to announce our new Director of Children and Youth Ministries, Jessica Hunt. Jessica has a background as a children’s librarian and in that context has developed and implemented many programs for children, youth, and intergenerational audiences. While not previously a UU, she exudes our values, has a passion for learning, and will attend a weeklong training in UU curriculum and resources at The Mountain in July. She will be on duty as of August 1.

Note: Current Director of Children and Youth Ministries Regina Knabe’s last Sunday with us will be July 15. She has set up multi-age programming to carry us to Labor Day, giving Jessica time to get to know us when she first arrives. On the 15th, Regina will be one of the speakers in the service and we will say goodbye to the whole Knabe family as they begin their new adventure. There will be cake involved.

Minister’s Summer Schedule

Rev. Kathy will be on vacation July 9-27.

New Sunday Morning Worship Schedule as of August 1!

Single Service at 10:30 am preceded at 10:15 am by 15-minute hymn sing.

A recent survey of the congregation asked for input on the Sunday morning schedule. For the last six years we have offered two services from September to May at 9:30 & 11:00 am. The survey was done in part because of low attendance at the 9:30 am service and the burden placed on volunteers (music and welcome team) in staffing two services.

The 86 surveys returned indicate a clear preference for a single service at 10:30 am with other options during the week. The most common reason given for an earlier-than-11:00 am option was the ability to get on with the day. We have decided to add a 15-minute hymn sing before service for those who like to sing and would like to be introduced to new songs.

Out of 84 surveys returned:

44 preferred 10:00 or 10:30, 10:30, or 10:30 or 11:00 (counts were 11, 19 14)

16 prefer earlier with 9:30 or 10:00 being indicated preferences

14 prefer later with 11:00 the indicated preference

12 indicated no preference

Community Garden Workshops Survey

Thank you to everyone who came out on July 23 for our garden action day! Check out our progress, including the planting of multiple fruit trees generously donated by Rob Greenfield. One of our goals is to offer workshops that align with our community garden mission of “promoting sustainable living, health and wellness, volunteerism, and mindfulness.” Please take this short survey to let us know your level of interest in the suggested workshop topics, or to suggest ideas of your own. The link to the survey can be found here for you to complete by July 31: https://goo.gl/forms/AfLezLIKUSLgvRMJ3.

1U Maintenance Contact Info

As a follow up to the annual meeting introduction of the Long Term Maintenance & Enhancement Team (LTME), we now have an email for you to use if you observe something on campus that you feel needs repair or some loving attention. Remember that we now will have monthly inspections of the campus in order to monitor buildings and grounds, so we should be more on top of routine maintenance than we have been in the past. That said, the more eyes on things the better.

You can always mention an item to the team members: Alan Oberholtzer, Alex Moore, Dan Homblette, George Hooper, John Hartgering, or Mike McCleskey. However if you want to send us an email, please use ltm@orlandouu.org. please be as specific as possible, including details on the location. Send a picture rather than a thousand words. Thanks, LTME Team.

Share the Plate Update

Stay tuned later this summer for information about suggesting new groups for Share the Plate for next year, which usually happens during our Opportunity Fiestas of volunteer planning and organizing in August.

Leave 1U a Gift from Your Estate and Get a 10% Match Now

If you name 1U or certain other UU organizations as beneficiaries in your will, living trust, or IRA, and notify the Wake Now Our Vision Legacy Challenge, the named beneficiary organization(s) could be eligible to receive a 10% match immediately. Shelter Rock, a very generous UU congregation, is currently providing up to $5 million in matching funds for this campaign with the goal of encouraging people to strengthen Unitarian Universalism through planned giving.

So, for example: If someone identifies their intention to leave $100,000 to 1U and files an application for the match, 1U could be eligible to receive $10,000 in matching funds now. One third of the $5 million is already committed, so it is important to act now, while the match is available. To learn how you can participate, visit www.wakenowourvision.org, or email Endowment@orlandouu.org.

Rev. Kathy’s Blog

Rev. Kathy writes to her blog weekly and you can check it out growinginplace.wordpress.com.

It is also vital that current information is available for electronic banking arrangements. Contact Amy Fairweather at churchadministrator@orlandouu.org or call the church office at 407-898-3621. We appreciate your help with this!

Do You Have an RMD and Are 70½ or Older?

A Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA or Inherited IRA can cause a higher tax burden. Consider paying your pledge to the Church via a direct Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA. If you are 70½ or older you can instruct your IRA or Inherited IRA custodian to send your QCD directly to the Church to pay your pledge. A QCD counts dollar-for-dollar toward fulfillment of an RMD (up to $100,000) but is excluded from taxable income. You can view or download a sample letter for instructing your IRA custodian here or contact Amy at the Church office to receive it by email. If you have questions contact Michael Cohen or any other member of the Church Endowment Board (Mike Haddad, Jean Siegfried, Diane P. Kerkhoff or Ken Lofgren). For specific tax advice contact a tax professional.

Other members serve in providing phone calls, greeting cards, rides to church events, medical appointments, meals for a while, pet care, etc. Please contact our Caring Circle coordinator Kathy Homblette at CaringCircle@OrlandoUU.org for details or to participate. Caring Circle contact for July is Frances Roberson, who can each also be reached at caringcircle@Orlandouu.org.
