Friday – June 9

Black Cat Cafe – 7:30-10:30 pm, Gore Hall

The 2nd Friday of each month, join us at this open-mic coffeehouse to share and enjoy great music, poetry, stories, dance & more! All are welcome! $2 donation. More info: BlackCatCafe@OrlandoUU.org or visit on the Web.

Saturday – June 10

Move into Enrichment Center, Out of Gore Hall: Helping Hands Needed!, 9:30 am-2:00 pm (roughly)

We are moving back into our beautiful Enrichment Center campus today. We need folks to help unload the mobile storage units and get things in place in our new spaces. We will also have another Giveaway Bonanza this weekend to find new homes for the things that we no long need from Gore Hall — we also need a couple of volunteers to help with that.

We only have a one-week window for moving back into the Enrichment Center and out of Gore Hall, so we will also need more volunteer help through the week and the following weekend.

Moving helpers: If you have a sturdy dolly for moving boxes — and especially one of the flat ones for moving furniture, those would be really useful.

And: If you have sturdy, clean boxes that close that you can contribute to the cause, please contact Suzanne Oberholtzer (dinnerwithfriends@Orlandouu.org) or Amy Fairweather (FUCO@cfl.rr.com, church office 407-898-3621).

Dinner with Friends – 6:00 pm-ish, Various Member Homes

Each person attending brings a different part of the meal. Questions? Email Alan Oberholtzer at dinnerwithfriends@Orlandouu.org.

Sunday – June 11

Parking Plan for the Next Two Sundays

Renovation of the Enrichment Center (EC) is almost done! The fence separating the EC from Gore Hall will soon be removed. New sod has been placed and our bountiful rains are helping it to thrive. As pretty as it looks, though, we are asking that no-one park on the sod just yet. It needs more time to root and grow.

So, for the time being (until June 25), please DO NOT PARK IN THE ENRICHMENT CENTER. Instead, please continue to follow the parking rules currently in place (see below).

The only on-site parking we will be able to use is the paved lot north of Gore Hall. This lot is being reserved for Guests and people with Special Needs, and there will also be Drop Off and Turnaround space. This restriction applies on Sunday mornings, AND any other time there are a lot of people on campus.

Special Needs includes cars with handicap placards and anyone else who can’t walk from an on-street parking spot for any reason. You will have to self-identify as to who needs the  Special Needs parking spaces.

So, what can you do?

* Walk, take the bus, car pool.

*Ride a bike.  The bike rack is now located on the east side of the sanctuary.  Please walk your bike from the Hampton sidewalk into the courtyard.

And, there is on-street parking on the west side (the side 1U is on) of Hampton Ave. We also have access to 2 commercial parking lots that we have permission to use on Sunday mornings only:  Plaza Live and VHI (Vision Health Institute). The parking map is on our church website, and there are printed copies available in Gore Hall foyer. Get a copy of the parking map and put it in your car. And put a flashlight in your car, too, in case you come to an evening event. Remember to park peacefully. Thank you for your kind attention.

Other News

Pulse – One Year Later

One year commemoration information is being added to our 1U website as it evolves.

Building The Dream Update

The changes in the Enrichment Center are amazing this week! Our MPaul team is laying sod, laying floor, installing ceiling tiles and lighting as well as painting the walls. It looks beautiful and is very close to done! The latest pictures are here.

We will have a debut of the Labyrinth and the Common Area on Sunday. We are anticipating the staff moving into their new offices on June 15 and the first usage of the rooms will be on Sunday, June 18.

Another exciting piece to remember during all the activity is our outstanding Challenge Grant. There is a dollar-for-dollar match for EVERY NEW GIFT OR PLEDGE received by the Water Service on Sunday, September 25.

As excited as we are and as close to done as it looks, please remember that it is an active construction site and no one is permitted to enter without a member of our MPaul team.

Parking in the new area won’t be available until June 26. Click here for a parking map. Have questions?  Feel free to drop us an email and let us know.

Thank You to Our Food Bank Volunteers

June 3 saw a terrific turnout of our food bank volunteers at Second Harvest. Thank you to every one of you for the good work you did! Our next date for Second Harvest is August 5 from 1-4 pm. Please plan to join us! RSVP to foodbank@orlandouu.org. Please remember to wear closed-toed shoes.

Minister’s Travels in June

Rev. Kathy has three trips slated in June plus the renovation-related office move. This will impact her availability. This coming week would be a good time to get in touch with her if you were thinking of doing so. The trips are: Youth Group Civil Rights Trip, June 6-9; Center for Reproductive Rights Summit in DC, June 14-15 (serving on a panel put together by Organize Florida; and General Assembly including the preceding Ministry Days, June 19-25.

Music Director Jamie Sterrett to Retire

Jamie Sterrett, who has served as 1U’s Music Director for 15 years, is retiring. His last Sunday will be August 13, at which time we will celebrate his service to our community. Meanwhile, we are grateful to have three months’ notice to discern next steps. Whenever a staff person of long standing departs, it is a good time to step back and assess needs going forward. The Personnel Committee and Rev. Kathy are developing a process to engage the congregation in conversation about the hopes and dreams for the program. We encourage everyone to take part and help determine how we can build on the strong and diverse program that is Jamie’s legacy.

Rev. Kathy’s Weekly Contribution to the Central Florida 100

Each week Rev. Kathy is one of 100 Community Leaders in Central Florida commenting on the news of the day. Read last Sunday’s offering here.

You can help keep those communication lines functioning by alerting the office about changes in your contact information: email address, street address, preferred phone numbers. Having current contact information allows 1U to keep you in the loop with all kinds of information about events. Ongoing Activities, Needs & Resources

Pastoral Care Associates

These can be challenging and difficult times as we try to understand what is happening in the world and how it relates to our personal lives. The holiday season can also cause stress and painful emotions. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Coordinator at pastoralassociates@OrlandoUU.org.

Help Keep Our Pulpit Beautiful!

Have you noticed the decorative flora at the pulpit during Sunday services? Simple, beautiful and log-falling easy for anyone to do! Do you grow flowers or ornamental shrubs? Pass a wildflower field en route to church? Love to create floral arrangements? Want to make an almost effortless contribution to our community on the occasional Sunday? We even provide the vases. Join the Flowers Team and help provide pulpit flowers & greenery for a few services a year! On the Sundays of your choice you can supply cut fresh flowers, a potted plant or flower, an orchid, wildflowers, something from your garden or that of a neighbor (after you are given access)– even fine silk arrangements. Then you can take it home, give it away, or leave it in Gore Hall for church visitors to enjoy. To learn all the details or to join the team right now, email Karla Kizzort at flowers@orlandouu.org.

Join 1U A/V Team

Personalized training is provided, and you can polish your skills as you go. Contact us at audioteam@orlandouu.org, or you can always just show up at the A/V room right after service to chat. First Sunday Fellowship

1U members and friends gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, Conway, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. If you are interested in learning more or finding a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. Times and locations vary.

Give By Text

You can now make a contribution to First Unitarian Church with a quick text message! Simply send a text to 407-456-7082 with the amount you’d like to contribute.
