“A Matter of Balance” helps you to protect yourself from falls and injury now and in the years to come. We exercise and address the many issues surrounding falls: our individual concerns, our fall-ty habits, how to accomplish events we will someday find challenging and how to protect ourselves in and after a fall at home/in public.  This 8 week class will be held on Wednesdays, March 22 through May 10, from 2:00-4:00 pm (with snacks) in Gore Hall. This class is FREE and open to all! Minister Away

Rev. Kathy will be traveling until March 18 and will be blessedly disconnected until then. During her absence, contact the office to be pointed toward someone else who might be able to help. Please delay emailing her until her return.

Building The Dream Update AND PHOTOS!

Construction Update: Demolition continued last week. The road from Robinson is gone and the parking lot concrete is gone. The big Camphor tree that was outside of the northwest corner is gone to make space for the new community garden. A lot of work on the land and trees is happening to prepare the space for the new parking and Common Area. The breezeway from the Common Area to the Enrichment Center courtyard is cut out and the walls for the new office area have been framed. The team is starting to make as many direct purchases as possible (to save money) and is narrowing down our choices for things like office furniture, chairs and tables. We have released some of our contingency funds for the Enrichment Center with the good news that we haven’t found anything unexpected there at this point. For pictures of what happened last week, click here. Please don’t hesitate to drop us an email to bldgcommunications@orlandouu.org should you have any questions.

Parking Notes:  Please feel free to park in the Special Needs lot on the north side of Gore Hall if you have either small children or 4 or more people in your car. Otherwise, please use all of the alternative parking options. Click here for a parking map.

1U Justice Survey

There’s lots going on in our world and it seems like a good time to get a read on people’s interest in current events. Whether you think of yourself as an activist or not, please take a few minutes (maybe 10 if you ponder) to fill out our 1U Justice Survey. It will help to inform our work going forward.

Pop Up Events – for a Vibrant Democracy

A vibrant democracy requires an educated and engaged citizenry. Throughout the Winter and Spring, activities will “pop up” that give participants a chance to deepen their understanding of issues in our world today. Examples might include Common Reads (Books or Articles) and Films & Discussions and more. Although events will be shared in the Weekly Update, let our Program Assistant, Gaby, know if you would like to be on a special announcement email list.

Keeping in touch with 1U members and friends is important. You can help keep those communication lines functioning by alerting the office about changes in your contact information: email address, street address, preferred phone numbers. Having current contact information allows 1U to keep you in the loop with all kinds of information about events. It is also vital that current information is available for electronic banking arrangements. Contact Amy Fairweather at churchadministrator@orlandouu.org or call the church office at 407-898-3621. Pastoral Care Associates

These can be challenging and difficult times as we try to understand what is happening in the world and how it relates to our personal lives. The holiday season can also cause stress and painful emotions. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Coordinator at pastoralassociates@OrlandoUU.org.

1U Smoking Policy

The First Unitarian Board of Trustees has adopted a new smoking policy effective January 1, 2017. This applies at all times and to all persons and groups making use of the campus.

First Sunday Fellowship

1U members and friends gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, Conway, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. If you are interested in learning more or finding a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. Times and locations vary.
