Wrestling with our Understandings around Race — 12:30 pm, Hiett Library
The events of this year have called our attention to issues of race, and understanding our relationship to those issues. Many of us are wrestling with understanding and responding to our experience, our emotions, and what we are called to do. It can be difficult, and for some of us it is destabilizing. Let us remain open in our hearts to this journey. We anticipate deep conversation within the congregation, and hope for greater understanding, healing and spiritual development. Bring your questions and concerns and join with others in conversation. This is an open meeting, typically on the first Sunday of each month.

1U Justice Survey
There’s lots going on in our world and it’s seems like a good time to get a read on people’s interest in current events. Whether you think of yourself as an activist or not, please take a few minutes (maybe 10 if you ponder) to fill out our 1U Justice Survey. It will help to inform our work going forward.
Share the Plate Update
Great job! In February, you donated $1,350.12 for Alliance for Fair Food (AFF). This month, Share the Plate will spotlight a new partner, The Russell Home for Atypical Children. The Russell Home is the only private, non-profit facility of its kind in Central Florida. For over 60 years, the Russell Home has provided round-the-clock care to severely disabled children, and allowed them to stay, if necessary, for life, in a loving, supportive, familiar environment.
Building The Dream Update
This Week In Construction: The word of the week was DEMOLITION. MPaul went into the Enrichment center and started removing walls, ceilings and bathroom fixtures (which will be recycled). Carpet and tile flooring was removed. And we finally got our building permits from the city!
The fence will be moved to the edge of the Gore Hall on Friday, cutting off access to the road from Robinson and the parking by the Enrichment Center. Please use all of the alternative parking options. Photos of the initial demolition will be on 1U’s website shortly. Please don’t hesitate to drop us an email firstname.lastname@example.org should you have any questions.
Rev. Kathy’s Weekly Contribution to the Central Florida 100
Each week Rev. Kathy is one of 100 Community Leaders in Central Florida commenting on the news of the day. Read last Sunday’s offering here.
Pop Up Events – for a Vibrant Democracy
A vibrant democracy requires an educated and engaged citizenry. Throughout the Winter and Spring, activities will “pop up” that give participants a chance to deepen their understanding of issues in our world today. Examples might include Common Reads (Books or Articles) and Films & Discussions and more. Although events will be shared in the Weekly Update, let our Program Assistant, Gaby, know if you would like to be on a special announcement email list.

Update Your Contact Information!
Keeping in touch with 1U members and friends is important. You can help keep those communication lines functioning by alerting the office about changes in your contact information: email address, street address, preferred phone numbers. Having current contact information allows 1U to keep you in the loop with all kinds of information about events. It is also vital that current information is available for electronic banking arrangements. Contact Amy Fairweather at email@example.com or call the church office at 407-898-3621. We appreciate your help with this!

Ongoing Activities, Needs & Resources
Pastoral Care Associates
These can be challenging and difficult times as we try to understand what is happening in the world and how it relates to our personal lives. The holiday season can also cause stress and painful emotions. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Coordinator at pastoralassociates@OrlandoUU.org.

1U Smoking Policy
The First Unitarian Board of Trustees has adopted a new smoking policy effective January 1, 2017. It reads: No smoking of any kind, including the use of e-cigarettes, is allowed within any courtyard area on the First Unitarian Church of Orlando campus or within 25 feet of any building. This applies at all times and to all persons and groups making use of the campus.
First Sunday Fellowship
1U members and friends gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, Conway, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. If you are interested in learning more or finding a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. Times and locations vary.
