Share the Plate Update

Great job! You donated $1686.24 for The Russell Home for Atypical Children. For the month of April, Share the Plate will focus on Samaritan Resource Center (SRC). SRC is a coalition of churches in East Orlando who work with social service agencies throughout Orange County to help those at risk of poverty and homelessness.

Return to Human Rights Tour

As we heard a couple of weeks ago, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers’ social justice effort coming up later this month is the Return to Human Rights Tour. The tour ends in Tampa on Wednesday March 29. There will be a rally at both a Wendy’s and a Publix with a short march in between. The event starts at 5:00 pm. If you are interested in car-pooling to Tampa for the event, please check in with Dan Homblette at Gaby’s desk the next three Sundays. Dan will try to connect those that want to go with drivers. More info here.

Building The Dream Update AND PHOTOS!

Construction Update: Demolition continued last week. The road from Robinson is gone and the parking lot concrete is gone. The big Camphor tree that was outside of the northwest corner is gone to make space for the new community garden. A lot of work on the land and trees is happening to prepare the space for the new parking and Common Area. The breezeway from the Common Area to the Enrichment Center courtyard is cut out and the walls for the new office area have been framed. The team is starting to make as many direct purchases as possible (to save money) and is narrowing down our choices for things like office furniture, chairs and tables. We have released some of our contingency funds for the Enrichment Center with the good news that we haven’t found anything unexpected there at this point. For pictures of what happened last week, click here. Please don’t hesitate to drop us an email to bldgcommunications@orlandouu.org should you have any questions.

Parking Notes:  Please feel free to park in the Special Needs lot on the north side of Gore Hall if you have either small children or 4 or more people in your car. Otherwise, please use all of the alternative parking options. Click here for a parking map.

1U Justice Survey

There’s lots going on in our world and it seems like a good time to get a read on people’s interest in current events. Whether you think of yourself as an activist or not, please take a few minutes (maybe 10 if you ponder) to fill out our 1U Justice Survey. It will help to inform our work going forward.

Pop Up Events – for a Vibrant Democracy

A vibrant democracy requires an educated and engaged citizenry. Throughout the Winter and Spring, activities will “pop up” that give participants a chance to deepen their understanding of issues in our world today. Examples might include Common Reads (Books or Articles) and Films & Discussions and more. Although events will be shared in the Weekly Update, let our Program Assistant, Gaby, know if you would like to be on a special announcement email list.

Current Needs of Share The Plate Partners

See and respond to critical needs of our primary Community Partners here.

Thanks for your continued generosity.

Update Your Contact Information!

Keeping in touch with 1U members and friends is important. You can help keep those communication lines functioning by alerting the office about changes in your contact information: email address, street address, preferred phone numbers. Having current contact information allows 1U to keep you in the loop with all kinds of information about events. It is also vital that current information is available for electronic banking arrangements. Contact Amy Fairweather at churchadministrator@orlandouu.org or call the church office at 407-898-3621. We appreciate your help with this!

Plan Ahead

March 29 – Next CIW Rally in Tampa

In Florida, allies are additionally organizing for the tour’s finale: a march and vigil in downtown Tampa on March 29 calling on both Publix and Wendy’s to end their disregard for farmworkers’ human rights.

Ongoing Activities, Needs & Resources

Pastoral Care Associates

These can be challenging and difficult times as we try to understand what is happening in the world and how it relates to our personal lives. The holiday season can also cause stress and painful emotions. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Coordinator at pastoralassociates@OrlandoUU.org.

On the Sundays of your choice you can supply cut fresh flowers, a potted plant or flower, an orchid, wildflowers, something from your garden or that of a neighbor (after you are given access)– even fine silk arrangements. Then you can take it home, give it away, or leave it in Gore Hall for church visitors to enjoy. To learn all the details or to join the team right now, email Karla Kizzort at flowers@orlandouu.org.

Fair Trade Goods Every Sunday – Noon, Gore Hall

Fair Trade coffee and other goods are available Sundays at the back of Gore Hall after the 11:00 service. Sales of coffee, chocolate and tea benefit small independent growers, UUSC and our church. Think about these as thoughtful gifts!

1U Smoking Policy

The First Unitarian Board of Trustees has adopted a new smoking policy effective January 1, 2017. It reads: No smoking of any kind, including the use of e-cigarettes, is allowed within any courtyard area on the First Unitarian Church of Orlando campus or within 25 feet of any building. This applies at all times and to all persons and groups making use of the campus.

First Sunday Fellowship

1U members and friends gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, Conway, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. If you are interested in learning more or finding a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. Times and locations vary.

Give By Text

You can now make a contribution to First Unitarian Church with a quick text message! Simply send a text to 407-456-7082 with the amount you’d like to contribute. Make sure to include the dollar sign before the amount (for example: $25).  NOTE: Do not place a space between the dollar sign and the dollar amount.  Within a few minutes, you’ll be sent a text with a link to register. Click on the link and enter your cardholder name and credit or debit card information.
