Mystic Grove is co-hosting Pagan Pride 2018 on Sept 29 at 1U! If you want to help out, contact either Orlando Pagan Collective or mysticgrove@orlandouu.org.

We will be hosting a book table at Pagan Pride. You can “shop” at the table and “buy” the books with a donation of any amount. These funds support “full scholarships” and “half scholarships” to our Adult RE classes. If you have books you have outgrown, consider donating them at any Craft Circle on 1st or 3rd Fridays or at the monthly meeting on 1st Sundays. We will be accepting them all summer. Mystic Grove was given several collections of pagan interest books from folks who are moving away and from a dear member, Mary Ellen Mayo, who passed away.

Community Garden Update

We are making progress on our new community garden! We’ll be completing individual raised beds and planting fruit trees for all to enjoy during the months of May and June. Contribute to this meaningful part of our campus by attending one or both work days:

Saturday May 19      9:00 am-noon

Saturday June 23    9:00 am-noon

Please note: Much of the labor will require shoveling, wheelbarrowing, and lifting, but we will work to accommodate participants of all ages and abilities. Bring close-toed shoes, gloves, water, sunscreen, a hat, and a bagged lunch to enjoy fellowship after the workday.

Leave 1U a Gift from Your Estate and Get a 10% Match Now

If you name 1U or certain other UU organizations as beneficiaries in your will, living trust, or IRA, and notify the Wake Now Our Vision Legacy Challenge, the named beneficiary organization(s) could be eligible to receive a 10% match immediately. Shelter Rock, a very generous UU congregation, is currently providing up to $5 million in matching funds for this campaign with the goal of encouraging people to strengthen Unitarian Universalism through planned giving.

So, for example: If someone identifies their intention to leave $100,000 to 1U and files an application for the match, 1U could be eligible to receive $10,000 in matching funds now. One third of the $5 million is already committed, so it is important to act now, while the match is available. To learn how you can participate, visit www.wakenowourvision.org, visit the Wake Now Our Vision table in Gore Hall on Sundays in April, or email Endowment@orlandouu.org.

Rev. Kathy’s Blog

Rev. Kathy writes to her blog weekly and you can check it out growinginplace.wordpress.com.

Having current contact information allows 1U to keep you in the loop with all kinds of information about events. It is also vital that current information is available for electronic banking arrangements. Contact Amy Fairweather at churchadministrator@orlandouu.org or call the church office at 407-898-3621. We appreciate your help with this!

Do You Have an RMD and Are 70½ or Older?

A Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA or Inherited IRA can cause a higher tax burden. Consider paying your pledge to the Church via a direct Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA. If you are 70½ or older you can instruct your IRA or Inherited IRA custodian to send your QCD directly to the Church to pay your pledge. A QCD counts dollar-for-dollar toward fulfillment of an RMD (up to $100,000) but is excluded from taxable income. You can view or download a sample letter for instructing your IRA custodian here or contact Amy at the Church office to receive it by email. If you have questions contact Michael Cohen or any other member of the Church Endowment Board (Mike Haddad, Jean Siegfried, Diane P. Kerkhoff or Ken Lofgren). For specific tax advice contact a tax professional.

Join Justice GoogleGroup

To get regular messages or a daily summary, and to share Social Justice Events and information (in central Florida and beyond), join 1U Justice googlegroup. Email socialjustice@orlandouu.org with your request to join. Include the name and e-mail address you want used. More information will accompany your invitation.

1U Caring Circle

Members of the Caring Circle offer kind, practical, tangible efforts to other church members who may be experiencing significant joys, concerns, sorrows, or changes in their lives. Monthly contact people follow up on Joys and Concerns expressed in Sunday worship, as well as notices from the minister or other church members, about short-term circumstances that may need attention. Other members serve in providing phone calls, greeting cards, rides to church events, medical appointments, meals for a while, pet care, etc. Please contact our Caring Circle coordinator Kathy Homblette at CaringCircle@OrlandoUU.org for details or to participate. Caring Circle contact for this month is Kathy Homblette, who can also be reached at caringcircle@Orlandouu.org.

Pastoral Care Associates

“In times of stress, the best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts.” – Fred Rogers

Pastoral Care Associates are caring, supportive members of the congregation trained to listen and encourage in times of stress or need. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community offer support as you deal with life’s challenges. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Coordinator at pastoralassociates@OrlandoUU.org.

Have you noticed the decorative flora at the pulpit during Sunday services? Simple, beautiful and log-falling easy for anyone to do! Spot the pretties bouquets at grocery stores and elsewhere? Do you grow flowers or ornamental shrubs? Pass a wildflower field en route to church? Love to create floral arrangements? Want to make an almost effortless contribution to our community on the occasional Sunday? We even provide the vases. Join the Flowers Team and help provide pulpit flowers & greenery for a few services a year! On the Sundays of your choice you can supply purchased cut fresh flowers, a potted plant or flower, an orchid, wildflowers, something from your garden or that of a neighbor (after you are given access)– even fine silk arrangements. First Sunday Fellowship

1U members and friends gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, Conway, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. If you are interested in learning more or finding a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. Times and locations vary.

Give By Text

You can now make a contribution to First Unitarian Church with a quick text message! Simply send a text to 407-456-7082 with the amount you’d like to contribute. Make sure to include the dollar sign before the amount (for example: $25). NOTE: Do not place a space between the dollar sign and the dollar amount.
