Beltane Celebration  — Gore Hall, 7:00 pm

As Samhain is about honoring Death, Beltane, its counter part, is about honoring Life. Halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, Beltane marks the passage into the growing season. It signals a time when the bounty of the earth will once again be had. May is a time when flowers bloom, trees are green and life has again returned from the barren landscape of winter, to the hope of bountiful harvests not too far away, and the lighthearted bliss that only summer can bring. Join Mystic Grove in celebrating the “wedding” of Green Man and Flower Woman and dancing around the Maypole this evening. Potluck follows at 8:00. Event details are at https://www.facebook.com/events/430578847359321/. If you are interested in taking a small volunteer job for Beltane, please visit for job descriptions: https://wordpress.com/post/mysticgrovecfl.wordpress.com/1593. You can come for orientation/reherasal for your job at 6:00 pm or 7:00 pm this evening.

May 20 — 11:00 am in the Community Room: Movie Talk – Isle of Dogs

Is Atari’s search for his dog, banished like all canines to “garbage island,” merely a search for Spots or is it a search for truth, science, kindness, justice and democracy? Dogs, metaphors, dry humor and human values will inform our discussion of Isle of Dogs. See the movie and come discuss in the Community Room (located in the far corner of the Enrichment Center). After the movie talk, be sure to stay for the 1U Annual Meeting in Gore Hall.

Wrestling with our Understandings around Race — 12:30-1:30 pm, Gore Hall Room A

This is an open meeting on the first Sunday of each month. The events of the past few years have called our attention to issues of race, and understanding our relationship to those issues. Each week our attention is drawn to another event in the public eye around race and justice. Many of us are wrestling with understanding and responding to our experience, our emotions, and what we are called to do. It can be difficult, and for some of us it is destabilizing. Let us remain open in our hearts to this journey. We anticipate deep conversation within the congregation, and hope for greater understanding, healing and spiritual development. You may find readings and resources at https://wrestlingwithrace.wordpress.com/2018/03/03/resources-2018.

Mystic Grove Monthly Meeting – EC Room 1, 12:30 pm

Leave 1U a Gift from Your Estate and Get a 10% Match Now

If you name 1U or certain other UU organizations as beneficiaries in your will, living trust, or IRA, and notify the Wake Now Our Vision Legacy Challenge, the named beneficiary organization(s) could be eligible to receive a 10% match immediately. Shelter Rock, a very generous UU congregation, is currently providing up to $5 million in matching funds for this campaign with the goal of encouraging people to strengthen Unitarian Universalism through planned giving.

So, for example: If someone identifies their intention to leave $100,000 to 1U and files an application for the match, 1U could be eligible to receive $10,000 in matching funds now. One third of the $5 million is already committed, so it is important to act now, while the match is available. To learn how you can participate, visit www.wakenowourvision.org, visit the Wake Now Our Vision table in Gore Hall on Sundays in April, or email Endowment@orlandouu.org.

Do You Have an RMD and Are 70½ or Older?

A Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA or Inherited IRA can cause a higher tax burden. Consider paying your pledge to the Church via a direct Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA. If you are 70½ or older you can instruct your IRA or Inherited IRA custodian to send your QCD directly to the Church to pay your pledge. A QCD counts dollar-for-dollar toward fulfillment of an RMD (up to $100,000) but is excluded from taxable income. You can view or download a sample letter for instructing your IRA custodian here or contact Amy at the Church office to receive it by email. If you have questions contact Michael Cohen or any other member of the Church Endowment Board (Mike Haddad, Jean Siegfried, Diane P. Kerkhoff or Ken Lofgren). For specific tax advice contact a tax professional.

Other members serve in providing phone calls, greeting cards, rides to church events, medical appointments, meals for a while, pet care, etc. Please contact our Caring Circle coordinator Kathy Homblette at CaringCircle@OrlandoUU.org for details or to participate.
