Guest at Your Table – through January 15

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) oversees our annual intergenerational program, Guest at your Table. This is an opportunity to raise support and awareness about the work that UUSC does around the world to advance human rights. This year the theme is Defying Hate. More details will be coming shortly.

The UUSC identifies and works in many areas to defy hate every day of the year. That may be “When the unaccompanied minors are deported from the Dominican Republic simply because they are of Haitian descent,” or when “…US religious groups export discrimination against LBGTQ individuals to African nations” or “When loud voices assign blame to innocent people and fan the flames of fear, prejudice and xenophobia…” Read more about Guest at your Table at uusc.org/gayt.

11:00 am in the Library: Movie Talk – “Hacksaw Ridge”

Hacksaw Ridge is the true story about World War II hero, Desmond T. Doss, the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor. Is it an anti-warm movie or an appreciation of our American military? Producer David Permut says: “This is a movie about a man who stood by his convictions at all costs; it appeals to everyone, no matter what side of what issues you are on.” Does this film illustrate our 3rd Principle “Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth” or does it illuminate our 5th Principle “The Right of Conscience…?”

Volunteer at Clean the World – 1:00-3:00 pm. Mark your calendar!

Children ages 8 through 15 require supervision by a parent or guardian. Please remember to wear closed toed shoes. Gloves will be provided. The location is at 400 Pittman St., Suite A, Orlando, FL 32801. To RSVP or with questions, contact blooddrive@orlandouu.org.

New Tradition: Giving Tuesday

In recent years, the Monday after Thanksgiving has been termed Cyber Monday—when many people go online and buy holiday presents. As a response, GIVING TUESDAY was created. This is a day when you can donate money to a favorite cause. We encourage you to give on Tuesday, November 29 and we’d love for you to consider 1U’s Building The Dream Capital Campaign. We are in the final detail and budgeting phase and we are literally pinching pennies right now. If you donate $50, that pays for a square yard of sod. $100 pays for several flooring tiles for our children’s nursery, made of eco-friendly materials. $300 buys a beautiful double-paned energy-efficient window. Every dollar counts at this point; we are grateful for your consideration. Just go to our website—orlandouu.org—and click on the “DONATE” button on the top right. You can submit your donation under the “Capital Campaign Donation” heading. Alternatively you can mail a donation to church or put it in the collection basket—make sure it is labeled Capital Campaign Gift to separate it from your campaign pledge.

Blue Holiday: A Special Service of Remembrance & Hope December 11

We are inviting the larger community to join 1U for a Blue Holiday Service on the day before the 6-month anniversary of Pulse. Offered by the Pastoral Associates, the service is designed to welcome all–of every faith or of no faith. While the holiday season can be joyous, many also find the expectations, hectic activity, and memories overwhelming. This year, in addition to our individual losses, we acknowledge our communal loss. This special service gathers us in a sense of welcome, trust, and understanding in what can be a very painful time of the year. A simple reception in the fellowship hall will follow the 30-minute service in the sanctuary.

It reads: No smoking of any kind, including the use of e-cigarettes, is allowed within any courtyard area on the First Unitarian Church of Orlando campus or within 25 feet of any building. This applies at all times and to all persons and groups making use of the campus.

First Sunday Fellowship

1U members and friends gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, Conway, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. If you are interested in learning more or finding a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. Times and locations vary.

Minister’s Day Off

Rev. Kathy is changing her day off to Fridays. Thursday will be her writing day, which means she will typically be focused on worship preparation. Therefore, her most available days (aside from Sunday) will be Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
