Guest at Your Table November 20 to January 15

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) oversees our annual intergenerational program, Guest at your Table. This is an opportunity to raise support and awareness about the work that UUSC does around the world to advance human rights. This year the theme is Defying Hate. More details will be coming shortly.

The UUSC identifies and works in many areas to defy hate every day of the year. That may be “When the unaccompanied minors are deported from the Dominican Republic simply because they are of Haitian descent,” or when “…US religious groups export discrimination against LBGTQ individuals to African nations” or “When loud voices assign blame to innocent people and fan the flames of fear, prejudice and xenophobia…” Read more about Guest at your Table at uusc.org/gayt.

1U Smoking Policy

The First Unitarian Board of Trustees has adopted a new smoking policy effective January 1, 2017. It reads: No smoking of any kind, including the use of e-cigarettes, is allowed within any courtyard area on the First Unitarian Church of Orlando campus or within 25 feet of any building. This applies at all times and to all persons and groups making use of the campus.

First Sunday Fellowship

1U members and friends gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, Conway, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. If you are interested in learning more or finding a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. Times and locations vary.

Minister’s Day Off

Rev. Kathy is changing her day off to Fridays. Thursday will be her writing day, which means she will typically be focused on worship preparation. Therefore, her most available days (aside from Sunday) will be Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Pastoral Care Associates

Pastoral Care Associates are fellow 1U members who have been especially trained to provide a confidential, caring presence to congregants undergoing stressful life challenges. Through this minister-extending program, members can receive compassionate care when they are in pain, sick, lonely or struggling with changes. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Coordinator at pastoralassociates@OrlandoUU.org.

1U Caring Circle

Members of the Caring Circle offer kind, practical, tangible efforts to other church members who may be experiencing significant joys, concerns, sorrows, or changes in their lives. Monthly contact people follow up on Joys and Concerns expressed in Sunday worship, as well as notices from the minister or other church members, about short-term circumstances that may need attention. Other members serve in providing phone calls, greeting cards, rides to church events, medical appointments, meals for a while, pet care, etc. Please contact our Caring Circle coordinator Elise Harrison at CaringCircle@OrlandoUU.org for details or to participate. Here are monthly contacts for the rest of 2016:
