Other tasks may be added depending on the number of people who show up. We will meet in the 1U parking lot at 9:00 am. Alan Oberholzer will be the point person for the cleanup teams.

Considering “Normal,” Water Communion, Rev. Kathy

Orlando and our world have certainly had many experiences in the last months and years that make us wonder what normal is. Let’s think about how we manage this moving target.

Having had to cancel our Water Communion on September 10, a bowl will be provided for those who wish to add a bit of water to our collective bowl. As this will not be the focus on the service, please approach the front of the sanctuary as you feel moved either before, during, or after the service to silently add your contribution.

Other News

Rev. Kathy Returns – Finally

Rev. Kathy is expected to return to Orlando the evening of Thursday, September 14 and will be in the office on Friday. She continues to be so very grateful to the congregation for its understanding and support when she went unexpectedly to NH for what turned out to be six weeks for her mother’s hospice, death, and memorial service and then was further delayed by Irma.

Storm Update From 1U and UUA Southern Region

Our prayers and thoughts go out to all those impacted by Hurricane Irma. While some will recover quickly, others have a long road ahead. The UUA has established a Hurricane Irma Recovery Fund to assist congregations in repairing any damage, and to respond to the needs of their members’ and their community’s efforts to get back on its feet. If you prefer to contribute by mail you may send a check to UUA Gift Processing, 24 Farnsworth Street, Boston, MA 02210; please make your check payable to the UUA with “Irma Recovery Fund” on the memo line. (To support both the Irma and Harvey recovery funds, you may send one check with a note indicating how much to allocate to each fund.) If you’re interested in supporting hurricane response efforts as a volunteer in Florida or Texas please see the UU College of Social Justice volunteer interest form here.

1U did sustain some minor damage: fallen trees and a few roof leaks.  We are fortunate, as all are manageable issues that will be addressed in the near future. (See campus volunteer workday announcement scheduled for Saturday, September 16.)  Those members who have contacted us reported minor losses. There are many from whom we have not heard. If you sustained damage and you have not contacted us, please do reach out to Rev Kathy and let her know if there is anything we can help with during the rebuilding process.

Save the Date(s) for Moving Parties

We are getting very close to moving back into Gore Hall! Tentative date for our first moving party will be Sept 23, so please keep that date in mind and we will keep you posted.

Share the Plate Update

Our first Share the Plate of the new church year will be held on Sunday, Sept. 24, and will focus on our longtime community ally, Planned Parenthood of SouthWest and Central Florida (PPSWCF). After celebrating its 100th anniversary last year and facing repeated calls from anti-abortion activists to “defund” it, Planned Parenthood remains the nation’s leading reproductive health care provider and advocate. Planned Parenthood’s health centers provide supportive reproductive health care to 2.4 million people in a year. An estimated one in five women has relied on Planned Parenthood health centers for care in her lifetime.

Fall Program Sign-Up Available

Beloved Conversations: Meditations on Race and Ethnicity provides a supportive small group opportunity for participants to self-reflection and deepening understanding. The program will begin with a required opening retreat the evening of Friday, October 27 and all day October 28. Participants will then be in small groups that will meet (approximately) weekly for eight two-hour sessions. Sign up here (preferred) or at 1U Central (aka Gaby’s Table) on Sundays. Deadline for signup is Sunday 10/15/17 but earlier is appreciated for planning purposes. All members are encouraged to attend participate. Preference will be given those who have not previously participated.

Themes for the 2017-2018 Program Year: Race, Democracy, & Economic Justice

It has been the custom in recent years to choose an annual Program Theme that helps to integrate some of the programming at 1U.  In addition, we have sub-themes which help to define the year. These themes have and may be used in worship in the sanctuary, in the children’s programming, in adult programming, in Covenant Group Sessions, and more. While program leaders had already been looking at the themes of Race, Democracy, & Economic Justice, events of the summer have made them even more timely. The year will be divide into three terms: Racism – An Introduction (October-November), Racism & Democracy (January-February), Racism & Economic Justice (March-April). Each term will have one major activity which all members will be encouraged to participate in. For the Fall, we encourage people to sign up for Beloved Conversations: Meditations on Race & Ethnicity (details elsewhere.) Other activities will be planned for those unable to make the commitment or who already participated. More info on themes will be shared as it evolves.

Building The Dream Update

Things are really coming together! Gutters are up at Gore Hall. Grinding of the terrazzo floor has been completed and there are just a few spots that will need to be touched up. Carpets are down in the new classrooms, interior painting is mostly done, and exterior painting continues. The big news is that we are 100% so far on passing major inspections – M Paul continues to deliver on so many levels! New photos aren’t available yet – you can see older photos here.  We’ll work towards getting new photos soon!

The latest Contingency and Fundraising List can be found here – please considering helping us complete these items. You can donate on Sundays, by check or online (mark that it is “for the building“). Have questions or comments? Feel free to drop us an email and let us know.

Rev. Kathy’s Blog

Ongoing Activities, Needs & Resources

Pastoral Care Associates

These can be challenging and difficult times as we try to understand what is happening in the world and how it relates to our personal lives. It can be comforting to know you’re not alone and it helps to have someone from 1U’s faith community listen, care, and offer support. If you are in need, contact our Pastoral Care Coordinator at pastoralassociates@OrlandoUU.org.

Help Keep Our Pulpit Beautiful!

Have you noticed the decorative flora at the pulpit during Sunday services? Simple, beautiful and log-falling easy for anyone to do! Do you grow flowers or ornamental shrubs? Pass a wildflower field en route to church? Love to create floral arrangements? Want to make an almost effortless contribution to our community on the occasional Sunday? We even provide the vases. Join the Flowers Team and help provide pulpit flowers & greenery for a few services a year! On the Sundays of your choice you can supply cut fresh flowers, a potted plant or flower, an orchid, wildflowers, something from your garden or that of a neighbor (after you are given access)– even fine silk arrangements. Then you can take it home, give it away, or leave it in Gore Hall for church visitors to enjoy. To learn all the details or to join the team right now, email Karla Kizzort at flowers@orlandouu.org.

Join 1U A/V Team

Personalized training is provided, and you can polish your skills as you go. Contact us at audioteam@orlandouu.org, or you can always just show up at the A/V room right after service to chat. First Sunday Fellowship

1U members and friends gather in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, Conway, South Orlando, so far) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. If you are interested in learning more or finding a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. Times and locations vary.

Give By Text

You can now make a contribution to First Unitarian Church with a quick text message! Simply send a text to 407-456-7082 with the amount you’d like to contribute. Make sure to include the dollar sign before the amount (for example: $25).  NOTE: Do not place a space between the dollar sign and the dollar amount.  Within a few minutes, you’ll be sent a text with a link to register.
