Wrestling with our Understandings around Race — 12:30 pm, EC Community Room

The events of this year have called our attention to issues of race, and understanding our relationship to those issues. Many of us are wrestling with understanding and responding to our experience, our emotions, and what we are called to do. It can be difficult, and for some of us it is destabilizing. Let us remain open in our hearts to this journey. We anticipate deep conversation within the congregation, and hope for greater understanding, healing and spiritual development. Bring your questions and concerns and join with others in conversation. This is an open meeting, typically on the first Sunday of each month. Ellen Tetlow is the contact. Today we will discuss the recent #take a knee. Here is a lesson plan on the topic.

Mystic Grove Monthly Meeting – 12:30-1:30 pm, EC Room 1

The Mystic Grove is an eclectic Pagan group affiliated with the First Unitarian Church of Orlando. Rituals are volunteer-led and the volunteer may choose to do the ritual in the style of their Pagan path. Although we vary in the different Pagan paths we follow, we are all Unitarian Universalists.

1st Sunday meetings are a great way to get to know us and how we work. Everyone is welcome to attend. Here we discuss how the past ritual went, plan for next ritual, classes, craft circles, and more. Lunch at a nearby restaurant follows for those wanting to enjoy fellowship after the meeting. Facebook RSVP, more info, email us at mysticgrove@orlandouu.org.

First Sunday Fellowship

October 1st is the first Sunday of the month, and that means 1U members and friends will be gathering in various parts of Orlando (Winter Park, East of 436, Downtown, West Orlando, South Orlando, and Conway) for neighborhood connections. These are opportunities for social interactions, a meal and/or beverage, and the chance to expand relationships. Unlike “Dinner with Friends,” groups are meeting at neighborhood restaurants, not individual homes. If you are interested in learning more or finding a group near you, contact Kathy Homblette at Fellowship@orlandouu.org. Times and locations vary.

We would love to bring together a group in the Maitland/Casselberry area (or other northern suburbs). Please contact Kathy Homblette if you would like to know more about how you might play a part in moving this fellowship idea into your area, by emailing Fellowship@orlandouu.org.

The Alliance matched $1,000 of 1U “Share the Plate” donations to Planned Parenthood on September 24. 1U members donated over $1,500 to the cause, so Planned Parenthood will receive over $2,500 from First Unitarian Church. Thank you, all who supported this important cause.

The Alliance Board will meet at 10:45 in the community room at 1U. The full membership will meet in the assembly room at 12:00 for a bag lunch and business meeting.

We encourage donations of nearly new (or well preserved old) treasures, jewelry, giftable items, and recent or classic books. Please set these things aside for us and bring them when we open our resale shop in late October. We will turn them into cash for the charities we select.  We cannot accept clothing at this time. For questions or more info, contact the Alliance at Alliance@Orlandouu.org.

Community Garden Planning Meeting – 6:00 pm, EC Assembly Room

This meeting about the re-birth of our community garden should go no longer than 7:30. In the session, learn about permaculture and starting to plan the new direction for the garden space. Hope you can make it!  We have a clean slate on our new site so we have the chance to rethink our approach. We will likely still have a few traditional raised beds but are also exploring implementing permaculture, which is essentially dedicating a space to a garden ecosystem. It would include fruit trees, shrubs, vines and traditional plantings, all of which are edible.

RUUM Monthly Meeting – 11:30 am,

RUUM, the Retired Unitarian Universalist Men’s group will have our next regular Monthly Meeting today after taking most of the summer off.  RUUM holds one regular informal meeting on the 1st Thursday of every month for an opportunity to share what is happening in each of our lives, to discuss business and scheduling, or just share ideas and thoughts for the future. We bring our lunches, enjoy camaraderie, and chat informally around the table for about an hour and a half; sometimes we even have a topic in advance!

On or about the 3rd Thursday of the month, we take a field trip organized in advance by one of our participants to a local destination of interest (for example, last year we had a guided tour inside City of Orlando Fire House #1, and had a docent-lead tour of the Morse Museum to be amazed by their extensive Tiffany glass collection). At our meeting today we will kick around a few ideas currently on the table and set a tentative schedule for the coming months.

Most of us are members or friends of 1U. Participation in our field trips is always open to wives and partners. Requests for additional information can be sent to RUUM@orlandouu.org to the attention of Craig Alig.

Building The Dream Update

It’s time to move again!  Great progress continues in Gore Hall – so much so that we’re ready to start moving back in this Saturday, September 30 at 9:00 am!  Please mark this date & time on your calendar and come lend a hand – we’ll need dollies, pick-up trucks, wagons, and plenty of help. We’re working through final decisions on furniture, signage, and landscape along with working the punch list of open tasks. Irma did set us back a little, so our open house/community event has been moved to Saturday, November 11. Look for more updates on this in the coming days. We’re just weeks away from seeing our beloved project completed! We are so grateful for the support and patience from the congregation. Exciting times!

The latest Contingency an Fundraising List can be found here – please consider helping us complete these items. You can donate on Sundays, by check or online (mark that it is “for the building“). Have questions?  Feel free to drop us an email and let us know.

Emergency Funds Needed to Assist Post-Irma Immokalee Workers

Please help the Immokalee Farmworker community that was severely damaged by Hurricane Irma. Please bring your cash or check donations to First Unitarian Church on Sunday, Oct. 1. Checks should be made to First Unitarian with a notation “For Immokalee Farmworkers Fund.”  The Coalition of Immokalee Workers has set up an independent charity to help the workers and pledges that “All funds raised will be used to support farmworker communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.” You may also send donations directly through https://secure.actblue.com/ donate/immokalee.

Share the Plate Update

Congratulations! So far, you’ve given $1516.01 through Share the Plate for our longtime allies, Planned Parenthood of SouthWest and Central Florida (PPSWCF), and that total is likely to rise even higher due to some late donations that still need to be verified. In addition, the Alliance has matched the first $1000 of that amount, for a total of $2516.01 to support reproductive health and rights in our community. In October, we’ll be Sharing the Plate with Victims Service Center of Central Florida (VSC). Since 1999, the VSC has been providing individualized services and resources to victims of sexual assault, violent crime, and traumatic circumstances through crisis response, advocacy, therapy, and community awareness. VSC operates the only Certified Rape Crisis Center for both Orange and Osceola Counties in Florida, and recently began serving Seminole County.
